PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s AI-based upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It reconstructs a higher-resolution output from the image a game renders, which can give developers room to balance image detail and performance. It does not guarantee native 4K rendering or a fixed frame-rate gain: results depend on the game’s settings, implementation, and workload.

What is PSSR on PS5 Pro?

PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. In practical terms, the game first renders an image at an internal resolution; PSSR then reconstructs a larger output image from that input. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement describes the technology and its PS5 Pro role.

Upscaling is a rendering technique, not a display mode that makes every source pixel equivalent to a natively rendered one. A game may output to a 4K display while rendering internally at a lower or changing resolution. The reconstruction quality depends on the input image and the game’s implementation.

How can PSSR affect image quality and performance?

Performance headroom comes from the game’s rendering choices

Rendering fewer pixels can reduce the work needed to draw a frame. A developer may use that headroom to target a higher frame rate or enable other visual features. But PSSR itself does not guarantee faster performance: developers choose internal resolution and graphics settings, and the demands of a scene can change. Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro technical deep dive explains the trade-off in its own game context: lower render resolution can help frame rate, while clarity and artifacts may be affected.

Reconstruction quality is visible in detail and motion

When judging an upscaled image, look at fine detail and edges, as well as whether details remain stable during motion. Flicker, shimmer, or other reconstruction artifacts can affect the result. Lowering the internal resolution may make those issues more noticeable, while a stronger reconstruction can improve the appearance of detail. No single outcome applies to every game or scene.

For a meaningful comparison between graphics modes, check the game’s own options and disclosures: internal or dynamic resolution, target and sustained frame rate, image stability, fine-detail clarity, effects such as ray tracing, and whether the mode uses original or upgraded PSSR. Without comparable measurements, a general ranking of games or a percentage performance claim would be misleading.

What changed in upgraded PSSR?

On February 27, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR with a substantially different neural-network and algorithmic approach. Sony named Resident Evil Requiem as the first announced game to use it. At that announcement, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles; that is a dated Sony-published figure, not a current exhaustive count or an independent benchmark. Sony’s announcement provides those details.

In its March 16, 2026 rollout article, Sony said the upgraded version improves image stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance consistency, while noting that results vary by title. Sony also said players could enable the upgraded PSSR for existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR through an optional system setting, and turn it off if unexpected visual effects occur. These are Sony’s statements about the rollout, not independent comparative test results. See Sony’s rollout announcement.

How do you enable or disable upgraded PSSR?

Sony’s March 2026 announcement describes an optional system setting for supported games, but does not state an exact menu path. It says the option can be used with existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR; it is not a universal override that adds support to every game.

  1. Check the game’s current patch notes and in-game graphics options to confirm whether it supports PSSR and whether an upgraded-PSSR option is available.
  2. On PS5 Pro, look for the optional enhanced-PSSR system setting described in Sony’s rollout announcement, then enable it for a supported game.
  3. If the image shows unexpected visual effects, turn the setting off and compare the game’s available modes.

The March 2026 article named examples including Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, and Rise of the Ronin, alongside games receiving later patches. That is a dated announcement list, not a guaranteed current inventory. Confirm support in the individual game’s latest patch notes or options before relying on it.

Is PSSR the same as 4K?

No. PSSR is an upscaling method; 4K describes an output resolution. A game can use PSSR to reconstruct an image for a 4K output without rendering every pixel at native 4K. The output resolution alone therefore does not tell you the game’s internal rendering resolution or how stable its fine detail will look.

Does PSSR work on the regular PS5?

PSSR is the PS5 Pro technology. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate AI upscaling library for the base PS5’s lower performance tier. Sony’s announcement presents QSSR as distinct from PSSR, not as PSSR made available unchanged on the standard console. See Sony’s announcement of QSSR.
