The PS5 Prism does not have its own SSD. “Prism” is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2026 collection of transparent DualSense controllers and matching PS5 console covers, not a new PlayStation console model. The covers add no storage: capacity comes from the PS5 underneath them. Depending on that host, you get an advertised 825GB, 1TB or 2TB SSD, with approximately 667GB, 848GB or 1.89TB available for games and apps. You can add playable PS5 storage through the console’s PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 slot, or use USB extended storage as an archive and for PS4 games.

What is the PS5 Prism Collection?

Sony announced the Prism Collection on 28 October 2026. It contains three transparent DualSense wireless controller designs—Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray—and matching PS5 console covers. The collection launches from 4 February 2027. Pre-orders start on 10 November 2026 at 10am local time; Sony’s US direct-sales window is 7:00am Pacific / 10:00am Eastern.

The recommended retail price is $84.99 in the United States for a Prism DualSense controller and $74.99 for matching console covers. Sony lists equivalent prices of ¥12,480 including tax and ¥9,980 including tax in Japan, €84.99 and €74.99 in the euro area, and £74.99 and £64.99 in the United Kingdom. Covers are sold directly by PlayStation in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal and Italy, with limited quantities through selected retailers in other regions.

The transparent plastic, metallic middle cover and color effects change the appearance only. They do not contain an SSD, alter the console’s operating system or change its expansion slot. Sony’s announcement also does not identify whether every Prism cover fits the original PS5, the CFI-2000 Slim, the CFI-7000 Pro, or more than one group. Check the model designation on the product listing and packaging before ordering; earlier-generation covers have not been universally interchangeable.

How much storage does a PS5 with Prism covers have?

Use the host console’s model and storage specification, not the word “Prism,” to determine capacity. The following figures distinguish advertised capacity from the space available after system software reserves storage.

Host console Advertised SSD Approximate usable space Evidence and qualification
Original PS5 disc or digital (CFI-1000, 2020) 825GB 667GB IGN and Stevivor figures reported in 2026; PlayStation Universe reported the usable figure in 2024
PS5 Slim disc and earlier Slim Digital models 1TB 848GB Stevivor, 2026; applies to 1TB Slim models
PS5 Slim Digital (CFI-2100) 825GB 667GB IGN and Stevivor, 2026
PS5 Pro (CFI-7000) 2TB 1.89TB Sony states 2TB built in; PlayStation Universe reported approximately 1.89TB usable in 2024

Sony’s product information says part of the SSD is reserved for system software and other functions, so the displayed free space can vary with firmware and installed data. IGN estimated that roughly 150GB is occupied by the operating system, updates and firmware across the PS5 family. The approximately 667GB, 848GB and 1.89TB figures are therefore practical estimates from named outlets, not a single Sony-published usable-capacity table.

Does the PS5 Prism have more storage than a normal PS5?

No. A PS5 wearing Prism covers has exactly the storage of the original, Slim or Pro console used as the host. If the host is an original 825GB PS5, the cover does not turn it into a 1TB or 2TB machine; if the host is a PS5 Pro, its 2TB specification comes from the Pro hardware, not the Prism Collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PS5 Pro’s 2TB SSD is the largest factory option in this comparison. PlayStation Universe’s 2024 launch-review roundup described about 1.89TB usable—approximately 94.5% of the drive—while the original 825GB model leaves about 80% usable. Large modern installs can consume either console quickly: Tom’s Guide counted 37 first-party games totaling 2,989.1GB on the PlayStation Store in 2026.

How can I identify the PS5 model before buying a Prism cover?

Find the CFI model number on the console label or in the system-information screen, then match that number with the cover’s compatibility statement. The important groups are CFI-1000 for the original design, CFI-2000 for Slim models and CFI-7000 for PS5 Pro.

  • Look at the label on the underside or rear of the console for the CFI designation.
  • On the console, open Settings > System > Console Information and record the model number and storage details.
  • Do not assume that a cover advertised for “PS5” fits every chassis. Require an explicit model-group listing from Sony or the seller.

What is the best way to add playable PS5 storage?

Install a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD in the internal expansion bay. Sony supports M.2 storage for downloading, copying and launching both PS5 and PS4 games, making it the expansion method that behaves most like the factory drive.

Current M.2 requirements

  • Interface: PCI-Express Gen4x4 NVMe, Socket 3 (Key M). M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
  • Capacity: 250GB to 8TB. Sony’s current support table lists an 8TB maximum; older guides that cite 4TB reflect an earlier limit.
  • Supported lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110, corresponding to 30, 42, 60, 80 and 110mm.
  • Speed: Sony recommends sequential read performance of at least 5,500MB/s. A faster rating does not guarantee identical performance to the factory Ultra-High-Speed SSD.
  • Cooling: A heatsink or heat-transfer sheet is required. The complete drive and cooling structure must be no wider than 25mm and no thicker than 11.25mm—up to 8.0mm above the board and 2.45mm below it.
  • Construction: Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 devices are supported.

Sony does not guarantee that every drive meeting those dimensions will work and places responsibility for third-party selection and use on the buyer. The factory SSD is not removed or replaced; the M.2 is an additional drive. On first use, the PS5 formats the entire M.2, so copy off any existing data before installing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I install an M.2 SSD in a PS5, PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro?

Use a well-lit table, a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and, if needed, a flashlight. Touch grounded metal before handling the drive, and never power on the console with its cover removed.

  1. Update the PS5 system software, then shut the console down completely and unplug it.
  2. Remove the triangle-shaped side cover on a CFI-2000 Slim or CFI-7000 Pro. On a CFI-1000 original PS5, remove the base, place the console logo-down with the power button toward you, and lift and slide off the cover.
  3. Unscrew and remove the expansion-slot cover.
  4. Move the supplied spacer to the hole matching the SSD length. A typical 2280 drive uses the 80mm position.
  5. Hold the SSD by its edges, align the notch with the socket, insert it diagonally until fully seated, lower it and secure it with the screw.
  6. Replace the slot cover. If it will not close, the heatsink assembly exceeds the permitted height.
  7. Refit the console cover, reconnect power and follow the on-screen formatting guide. Do not interrupt power while formatting.

After formatting, choose Settings > Storage > Installation Location to send new downloads to the M.2. To relocate existing titles, open Game Library, highlight a game, press Options and select Move Games and Apps. An M.2 previously used in another PS5 can be moved without reformatting when the same account is signed in on both consoles. All data for a single title must remain in one storage location.

Following Sony’s specifications and instructions should not, by itself, remove the manufacturer warranty. Damage caused by an incorrect installation is not covered, and Sony advises removing the M.2 before sending the console for repair.

Which M.2 SSDs meet the PS5 requirements?

Choose a Gen4x4 NVMe model with a PS5-sized heatsink rather than buying on capacity alone. Sony’s requirements are the deciding test; licensing is an additional convenience, not a substitute for checking dimensions.

  • WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5: Sandisk’s 2026 materials describe it as officially licensed for PS5 and PS5 Pro, with an integrated heatsink and 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. Sandisk lists up to 7,300MB/s sequential read on 1TB–4TB versions and 7,200MB/s for the 8TB Optimus data sheet.
  • Samsung 990 Pro with Heatsink: Stevivor lists capacities up to 4TB and a stated maximum read speed of 7,450MB/s.
  • WD Black SN850X with Heatsink: Stevivor identifies versions up to 8TB as a value-oriented choice.
  • Lexar NM790 with Heatsink: Stevivor lists it as a budget option when the heatsink remains within Sony’s height limits.
  • Bare drives: A drive such as the WD Black SN7100 needs a separate low-profile heatsink. Measure the complete assembly, including any thermal pad, against the 11.25mm total limit.

Prices vary sharply with NAND supply and capacity. Tom’s Guide listed an officially licensed 4TB drive at $789.99 on Amazon in a 2026 snapshot, about $400 more than a year earlier; that is not a current guaranteed price. Sandisk’s claim that an 8TB model can hold up to 200 games assumes a 36GB average game size and is a marketing estimate, not a measured library result. Forbes reported a 2024 PS5 Pro installation of an 8TB SN850P returning 6,928MB/s in the console speed test against a 7,300MB/s specification; the drive was supplied for that review, and its 2024 prices are historical.

Can USB extended storage hold PS5 games?

Yes, but USB storage is an archive for PS5 titles rather than a drive from which they can run. PS5 games can be copied to USB to free internal space, then copied back to the console storage or M.2 when you want to play. PS4 games can install to and launch directly from USB extended storage.

  • Interface: SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster. Sony lists 5, 10 and 20Gbps families; some 20Gbps devices operate at 10Gbps.
  • Capacity: 250GB minimum and 8TB maximum.
  • Connection: Plug the drive directly into a SuperSpeed USB Type-A or Type-C 10Gbps port; do not use a USB hub.
  • Use: Only one USB extended-storage drive can be active at a time.

Format it at Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Format as USB Extended Storage. A drive already formatted as PS4 extended storage can be attached to a PS5 without reformatting. USB hard drives usually cost less per terabyte than Gen4 M.2 SSDs, making them practical for a large completed-game library.

Should I choose an M.2 SSD or USB storage?

Decision Internal M.2 SSD USB extended storage
Launch PS5 games directly Yes No; copy the game back first
Play PS4 games Yes Yes
Installation effort Open the console, fit a spacer, install a heatsink-equipped drive and format it Connect directly, format in Settings and manage the drive
Official capacity range 250GB–8TB 250GB–8TB
Typical cost per terabyte Higher because a Gen4 SSD and compliant heatsink are required Lower, especially with a hard disk
Best use Games you want ready to launch PS5 overflow and a PS4 library

For most players, Stevivor’s 2026 guidance places a 2TB M.2 in the practical sweet spot because major releases often occupy 100GB to 150GB. A 4TB model is more suitable when you keep a large installed library and want fewer moves. The official limit is 8TB on either expansion path, but the cost of high-capacity Gen4 storage can be substantial.

What storage setup makes sense for a Prism-covered PS5?

First identify the host model and its free space. If you regularly launch PS5 games, install a 2TB or 4TB M.2 with a compliant heatsink; it uses the internal expansion path Sony designed for playable PS5 storage. If you mainly need inexpensive overflow, retain a USB drive for PS5 archives and PS4 games, accepting the copy-back step for PS5 titles.

Prism hardware does not require a special “Prism SSD,” a different format or a different installation procedure. The same M.2 bay, USB rules and storage menus apply to the original PS5, every PS5 Slim SKU and PS5 Pro. The only Prism-specific hardware decision is whether the cosmetic cover is explicitly compatible with your CFI model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I see the exact free space left on my PS5?

Open Settings, choose Storage, then select Console Storage. The screen separates games and apps, media, saved data and other system usage, so the total is more useful than subtracting the advertised SSD size yourself.

Will an M.2 SSD erase files that are already on it?

Yes. The PS5 formats the entire drive the first time it is accepted as M.2 storage. Copy personal files elsewhere before installation, because the console does not offer a partial format for preserving an existing partition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Prism cover be fitted to a PS5 Pro?

Not necessarily. Sony’s Prism announcement does not state the compatible CFI group, and covers designed for the original PS5 or CFI-2000 Slim are not automatically compatible with CFI-7000 Pro. Wait for a listing that names PS5 Pro compatibility rather than relying on the color or collection name.

Does a faster-than-5,500MB/s SSD guarantee faster game loading?

No. Sony’s 5,500MB/s figure is a recommendation, not a performance guarantee. Sony also cautions that some games may not match the factory SSD’s exact behavior even when an M.2 drive has a higher sequential-read rating.
