Choose the Digital Edition if you are happy buying and downloading games and do not need an optical drive. Sony’s Canada page lists the configurations at 1TB for the disc console and 825GB for the Digital Edition; those are listed model specifications, not guarantees for every region or PS5 generation.
What is different between the PS5 Disc Edition and Digital Edition?
The key difference is the optical disc drive. The Disc Edition has one installed, so it can play supported game discs and disc-based video. The Digital Edition has no drive installed, so its games come from digital purchases and downloads unless you add a compatible detachable drive to an eligible model.
Both configurations can play digital PS5 and PS4 games. To purchase and download games, Sony says you need an internet connection and to sign in with a PlayStation account. Sony’s PS5 Support page also states that disc games are available only on a console with a disc drive installed.
Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the Disc Edition if you use physical media
- You already own supported PS5 or PS4 game discs.
- You want the option to play games on disc rather than relying exclusively on digital purchases and downloads.
- You want to watch supported disc movies, including 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD formats when using the compatible drive.
Sony describes the disc console as supporting PS5 and PS4 game discs. Disc playback is the practical deciding factor: a game disc cannot be played on a Digital Edition without a compatible drive installed.

Choose the Digital Edition if you do not need a drive
- You buy and download games rather than using game discs.
- You do not need disc-based movie playback.
- You are comfortable with the internet connection and account sign-in required to purchase and download from PlayStation Store.
Digital does not mean the console cannot play games offline in every circumstance; it means acquiring games depends on digital access, and a downloaded game’s offline availability can depend on the title and account or console settings.
Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Digital Edition?
Some Digital Edition owners can add Sony’s detachable drive, but compatibility depends on the console model. Sony’s setup instructions specify CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups and say an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. Sony’s Canada product page identifies the additional-drive option for CFI-2000/2100 slim groups. Check the exact CFI model number on your console and confirm local compatibility before buying; do not assume every older Digital Edition can be upgraded.

The detachable drive supports PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs, according to Sony’s accessory specifications. Setup details are on Sony’s PS5 disc-drive setup page.
Does the Digital Edition have less storage?
Sony’s Canada comparison currently lists 1TB for the Disc Edition and 825GB for the Digital Edition. These are nominal configurations for the models shown on that regional page; capacity can vary by model or market, and the usable space is lower than the nominal figure because system software reserves storage. Sony does not state an exact usable-capacity figure on that page.

Either configuration can expand storage with a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony advises checking its current size and performance requirements and installing current system software before using one. See Sony’s expandable-storage guidance; no specific SSD model is recommended here.

There is no reliable universal claim that one edition costs less overall. Retail prices, bundles, disc-game prices, and the price of a separate drive vary by region and date. Compare the local console price with the cost of the games you expect to buy and, for a compatible Digital Edition, the optional drive if you need physical media. A disc drive gives you disc playback, but it does not by itself establish that you will save money through discounts, borrowing, or resale.
