Choose the standard PS5 if you want disc playback, the PS5 Digital Edition if you buy games digitally and want the lower-cost option, or PS5 Pro if you want more built-in storage and enhanced visuals in games that support Pro features. Sony lists 1 TB, 825 GB, and 2 TB of storage for those models, respectively. The right choice depends chiefly on your disc collection, storage needs, supported-game features, and current local price.

Which PS5 should you choose?
Choose the standard PS5 for discs and Blu-ray playback
The standard model is the straightforward choice if you already own PS5 or PS4 games on Blu-ray, want to buy physical game discs, or want Blu-ray movie playback. Its included drive avoids the separate-drive compatibility and cost questions that apply to the digital-only models.
Choose PS5 Digital Edition for an all-digital library
The Digital Edition is a fit if you purchase games through the PlayStation Store and are comfortable downloading them. It has 825 GB of listed capacity—less than the standard model’s 1 TB—and no disc drive included. If you only play digital games, the absence of a drive does not prevent you from playing them.

Choose PS5 Pro for supported-game enhancements and more storage
Pro is aimed at buyers who value its 2 TB SSD and want the best available console presentation in games enhanced for PS5 Pro. Sony describes improvements including ray tracing, image clarity for 4K TVs, and higher frame rates, but these are not guaranteed across all PS5 titles. Check whether the games you actually play are Pro-enhanced before paying extra; Sony’s PS5 Pro page provides product details.
What to know about adding a disc drive
The Digital Edition and Pro are digital-only as sold, but Sony offers a separately sold drive for compatible models. The Digital Edition drive compatibility specified by Sony covers CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups, not every Digital Edition generation. The drive reads 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs; internet access is required to pair the drive and console during setup. Sony also says a drive can be added to PS5 Pro.

Before buying a drive, confirm your console’s model number and Sony’s current compatibility guidance, then compare the combined console-and-drive cost with the standard PS5 price. The add-on is unnecessary if you will use the console only for digital games.
Storage: compare usable room, then consider expansion
Sony lists 1 TB for the standard PS5, 825 GB for the Digital Edition, and 2 TB for PS5 Pro. Storage needs depend on the size and number of games you keep installed; the listed capacity is not a promise that all of it will be available for game installations.

Sony manuals list an M.2 SSD expansion connector on PS5 and PS5 Pro hardware. Expansion is an option if your library outgrows built-in storage, but check Sony’s current compatibility requirements before selecting a drive; the cited manuals do not establish a specific retail SSD recommendation. See the PS5 M.2 SSD installation guidance and the PS5 Pro storage guidance.
One future change to physical game availability
Sony’s U.S. buying page states that, from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. The same page says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is Sony’s stated policy on that page; it should not be read as a broader statement about every region’s retail availability, and Sony notes that design and specifications can change.

A quick decision checklist
- Disc collection or Blu-ray movies: favor the standard PS5.
- Digital purchases only: consider the Digital Edition, while accounting for its 825 GB listed capacity.
- Supported-game visual enhancements or 2 TB built-in storage: consider PS5 Pro, after checking support for the titles you play.
- Digital Edition or Pro, but discs matter: verify drive compatibility for your exact model and include the separate drive in the total cost.
- Comparing prices: compare the same country, source, and date. Sony’s recommended U.S. prices and the Direct listing accessed Oct. 3, 2026, differed by 99 cents for each model.
Sony says a vertical stand is sold separately. Treat it, an extra DualSense controller, or gaming audio as optional accessories rather than part of the core model decision.
