Sony calls its newly announced PS5 AI upscaling feature Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR); PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is the upscaling technology associated with PS5 Pro. Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined, hand-tuned performance tier for PS5, while positioning PSSR as the gold standard on PS5 Pro. They are related approaches aimed at different hardware targets—not interchangeable names or a proven, universal image-quality comparison.
QSSR and PSSR are for different PlayStation consoles

Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement presents QSSR as an additional AI-upscaling option for PS5. It says the feature is being made broadly available to PlayStation developers, which does not mean every PS5 game will include it. Sony’s announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles set to receive QSSR as an additional graphics option.

PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler. In its March 16, 2026 announcement, Sony described an upgraded PSSR as improving image stability, fine-detail clarity, and consistency in supported titles. The announcement said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time; that is a dated figure, not a current tally.
How their image-reconstruction approaches differ
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution-looking image from a game’s rendered image. Sony says PSSR analyzes each game image pixel by pixel as it upscales. For QSSR, Sony describes a streamlined neural network paired with hand-tuned implementation, designed to maximize performance on the standard PS5.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Those descriptions indicate different hardware and performance targets. They do not establish how much more processing PSSR uses, a specific resolution or frame-rate gain for either feature, or an identical quality level across the two consoles. Sony calls PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro; that is Sony’s positioning, not the result of a published controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR test.

QSSR is a game-level option, not a system setting that automatically changes every PS5 title. Sony’s first named QSSR games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Developers may add the library to other games, but support and available graphics options depend on each title.

For PSSR, Sony’s March 2026 announcement introduced an optional PS5 Pro setting called Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Mark Cerny, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect, said selecting it in Settings lets players experience the new PSSR in PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. The option therefore applies to supported games; it does not add PSSR to titles that lack support.
Sony’s PS5 Pro product page cautions that results vary by title. The image you see depends on the game’s implementation and its graphics modes, so support alone does not guarantee a visible improvement or the same result from one game to another.

Quick Recap
Which one matters for your buying decision?
- If you own a standard PS5: QSSR is the relevant name to watch for in supported games. Check each game’s listed graphics options rather than assuming the feature is present across the console library.
- If you own or are considering a PS5 Pro: PSSR is the feature Sony associates with that console. Check whether the specific games you play support it, and whether the optional enhanced-PSSR setting applies to them.
- If image quality is your deciding factor: Look for game-specific comparisons and graphics-mode details. Sony’s announcements do not provide a controlled, same-scene comparison of QSSR on PS5 and PSSR on PS5 Pro, so they cannot establish a universal winner.
