PS5 AI upscaling and AMD FSR are related, but they are not the same feature. Sony’s Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is a new AI-upscaling option for select standard PS5 games; PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games. AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a separate technology family used in supported games on PC and other platforms. Sony says upgraded PSSR and AMD FSR 4 draw on its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, but that does not make the technologies interchangeable or guarantee identical results.
For players, the practical difference is which console or platform they use and what a particular game supports. The game’s version, graphics mode, render resolution and image quality in motion matter more than the upscaler’s name alone.
What’s the difference between QSSR, PSSR and AMD FSR?
| Technology | Where it applies | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Standard PS5, in supported games | Sony announced it on October 1, 2026 as a streamlined neural-network upscaling tier tuned for the PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first titles using the library. These are Sony’s descriptions, not independent test results. Sony’s QSSR announcement. |
| PSSR | PS5 Pro, in supported games | Sony’s AI upscaling library for PS5 Pro. Sony announced an upgraded version on February 27, 2026, saying it stems from Project Amethyst work with AMD; Resident Evil Requiem was its first title at the time of that announcement. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement. |
| AMD FSR | Supported games on PC and other platforms | A separate AMD technology family. Sony describes FSR 4 as part of its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses FSR 3.1.5 on platforms outside PS5 Pro, while upgraded PSSR is the default upscaler on PS5 Pro at launch. IO Interactive’s game-specific description. |
These labels do not guarantee that every game uses an upscaler, or that a supported game offers the same option in every graphics mode. Sony’s announcement calls upgraded PSSR and FSR 4 products of a collaboration; it does not say they are one identical implementation.
Does the regular PS5 have PSSR?
PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler. The standard PS5’s newly announced AI-upscaling tier is QSSR, which Sony describes as a streamlined neural-network option designed around the standard console’s performance constraints. QSSR is not a universal console-wide switch: support is specific to games that implement it. Sony’s October 2026 announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles.

What upscaling changes for players
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution output from an image rendered at a lower resolution. Rendering fewer pixels can reduce GPU work, potentially freeing resources for a higher frame rate or other graphics effects. The trade-off is that reconstructed detail can look soft or unstable, especially in motion; results depend on the upscaler, the game’s implementation and the selected graphics mode.

Ubisoft Technology Director Pierre Fortin used a 1080p-to-2160p example to explain PSSR in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, describing the process as approximating three out of four pixels. That is an illustration from one game’s implementation, not a universal input/output setting for PSSR, QSSR or FSR. Fortin also explained that dynamic resolution scaling can change the input resolution as GPU demands vary. Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro technical discussion.
That is why a mode label such as Quality or Performance is not enough to predict the result. A useful comparison needs the game and platform build, patch, graphics mode, internal render resolution if disclosed, target output resolution, frame-rate target and how stable fine detail looks during movement.

Which PS5 games support AI upscaling?
QSSR on standard PS5
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games in its October 1, 2026 announcement. Sony says QSSR is intended to improve detail and stability, and Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald described its effect in the studio’s game context as adding “more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments.” These are Sony and developer statements, not results from an independent cross-game comparison.
PSSR on PS5 Pro
PSSR is available in supported PS5 Pro titles, not automatically in every game. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement said Resident Evil Requiem was the first game using upgraded PSSR at that point. Later implementations can differ by title: IO Interactive said upgraded PSSR would be the default upscaler for the PS5 Pro version of 007 First Light at launch.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Ubisoft also described PSSR, dynamic resolution scaling and graphics modes for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro. Its Technology Director, Pierre Fortin, said the studio found PSSR more stable than TAA overall in its evaluation of that game. This is a developer’s assessment of one implementation, not proof that PSSR is generally superior to FSR or other anti-aliasing methods.
FSR in games that support it
FSR support is also game- and platform-specific. For example, IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses FSR 3.1.5 outside PS5 Pro, while the PS5 Pro version uses upgraded PSSR by default at launch. That example shows the technologies can serve different platform builds of one game; it does not establish that all FSR games use that version or behave alike.

Is PS5 AI upscaling the same as AMD FSR?
No. QSSR and PSSR are Sony’s named PlayStation features, while FSR is AMD’s distinct technology family. Sony says upgraded PSSR and FSR 4 have roots in Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. That relationship is relevant, but it does not establish identical algorithms, settings, support or visual output in every game.
Version also matters: the FSR 3.1.5 cited by IO Interactive for non-PS5 Pro platforms in 007 First Light is not the same named version as FSR 4 discussed in Sony’s collaboration announcement. A game’s actual platform build and implementation are more useful than assuming all FSR versions—or all Sony upscalers—produce one consistent result.
How to compare upscaling in a game you play
- Check the platform and game support. Look for the title’s specific PS5, PS5 Pro or PC feature description. Do not infer support from the console or game alone.
- Record the exact version and mode. Note the game patch and whether you selected a mode such as Quality, Balanced or Performance. Some games tie different rendering behavior to different modes.
- Compare resolution and frame-rate behavior where disclosed. Separate internal render resolution from output resolution, and check whether dynamic resolution scaling is active. A stated output resolution does not, by itself, mean the game renders every pixel natively.
- Judge image stability in motion. Check fine detail, shimmer, flicker and stability while moving, not only a still screenshot. A developer’s description of its own game can provide context, but it is not a controlled comparison across technologies.
Is one upscaler better?
The available developer and Sony statements do not establish a universal winner or a frame-rate improvement that applies across games. IO Interactive reports cleaner detail, less shimmer and flicker, and better temporal stability from upgraded PSSR in its 007 First Light implementation. Ubisoft’s PSSR comments concern its own Assassin’s Creed Shadows evaluation. Those accounts are useful examples, not head-to-head tests of QSSR, PSSR and FSR in the same game on comparable hardware and settings.
For an individual player, the answer depends on the specific game, platform build and graphics mode—and whether the image and performance trade-off suits them.
