Yes—a PS4 Pro can improve the experience on a 1080p TV and in supported PSVR games, but the gains depend on each game’s Pro support. On a 1080p screen, Supersampling Mode can make supported games look cleaner, while some titles can run at higher or steadier frame rates. PSVR can benefit from title-specific rendering or performance enhancements, but its headset display does not become 4K.
What changes on a 1080p TV?
Sony said PS4 Pro games would run in 1080p, with some running at a higher or more stable frame rate. That means the benefit on a 1080p TV is not necessarily more pixels on screen: depending on the game, the image may look cleaner or performance may be steadier. The result varies by title, and a Pro console does not improve every game in the same way.
One option intended for 1080p displays is Supersampling Mode. Sony added it in system software 5.50 for PS4 Pro connected to an HDTV with a resolution of 1080p or lower. Sony says the mode cannot be enabled when the console is connected to a 4K display. Sony’s Supersampling Mode documentation explains the display requirement.
How to enable Supersampling Mode
- Connect the PS4 Pro to an HDTV set to 1080p or a lower resolution.
- Open Settings on the PS4 Pro.
- Select Sound and Screen, then Video Output Settings.
- Turn on Supersampling Mode. The option is available for a 1080p-or-lower display, not a 4K display.
- Check the specific game’s Pro support and settings. The visible benefit depends on how that title uses PS4 Pro.
What PSVR gains from PS4 Pro
PS4 Pro can improve PSVR games when developers support Pro-specific enhancements. Depending on the title, that can mean higher-quality rendering or steadier performance. Sony’s materials do not establish a universal percentage improvement across PSVR games, so the practical difference depends on the game rather than the headset alone.

The headset itself remains a 1080p-class display. Sony specifies one 1920×1080 panel shared between the eyes, with a maximum stereoscopic resolution of 960×1080 per eye. Sony’s PS4 Pro FAQ says the headset display tops out at 1920×1080 and does not support 4K output; its PSVR FAQ provides the per-eye figure.
Why 2160p pass-through does not mean 4K PSVR
The PSVR processor unit can pass through a regular 1080p signal and selected 2160p YUV 4:2:0 signals from a PS4 Pro to a compatible TV. That capability concerns the signal passed to the television; it does not raise the resolution of the headset’s physical display. Sony documents the pass-through formats in its PSVR FAQ.

When is a PS4 Pro upgrade worthwhile?
A Pro upgrade is most compelling if you use a 1080p TV and value supported games’ cleaner image or steadier performance, or if you play PSVR titles with Pro enhancements. Before buying, check whether the games you care about advertise PS4 Pro support. Sony describes these benefits as game-dependent, not as a fixed improvement shared by every title.
When comparing a used base PS4 with a PS4 Pro, consider the condition and cost of the hardware alongside the specific games you play. The Pro can offer a better presentation in supported titles, but it is not a route to a 4K PSVR headset.
