You can run PlayStation 2 games on an iPhone with Play!, a physical controller, and JIT enabled—but it takes more setup than installing an App Store emulator. Install the official iOS build, Play.ipa, through a development-signed sideloading method such as SideStore, enable JIT, then add disc images of games you are entitled to use. Play! does not need or accept an external PS2 BIOS file. Pair a DualSense or Xbox controller over Bluetooth, or use a compatible clip-on controller such as a Backbone One.

This guide covers the non-jailbreak SideStore route, the required JIT setup, controller pairing, game files, and the main alternatives. Compatibility varies by game, and there is no reliable 2026 figure for the share of the PS2 library that runs on iPhone.

What do you need to set up PS2 emulation on an iPhone?

Before you install anything, gather the sideloading and game-file essentials. A computer is needed for the initial SideStore pairing setup; SideStore says it can be used without a computer after that, over Wi-Fi. For a less frustrating experience, use a recent iPhone, a physical controller, and a game that appears on Play!’s compatibility tracker.

  • An iPhone or iPad: Provenance recommends iPhone 12 or newer, or an equivalent iPad, for PS2 emulation. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every game will run well.
  • A computer for initial setup: You need one to install and pair SideStore and to create the pairing file used by StikDebug.
  • SideStore or another development-signed sideloading method: The steps below use SideStore and a free Apple ID. A free Apple ID has a three-active-app sideloading limit, including SideStore itself.
  • Play.ipa: Get it from Play!’s official stable downloads at purei.org, not from a third-party IPA site.
  • A JIT enabler: This guide uses StikDebug and LocalDevVPN. StikDebug is not currently on the App Store.
  • A disc image of a game you are legally entitled to use: Play! supports formats including ISO, BIN/CUE, and CHD. Game images can be several gigabytes, so check that you have enough storage.
  • A controller: Choose a Bluetooth DualSense, Xbox or MFi controller, or a clip-on iPhone controller that matches your phone’s connector.

Why does Play! need JIT on iOS?

Play! uses just-in-time compilation to translate game code while it runs. Its README says that if you launch a game without JIT enabled, Play! will crash. Ordinary App Store apps cannot use JIT in the way Play! requires, so installing an emulator app is not, by itself, enough to play PS2 games.

Play! is the official iOS PS2 build from the project led by Jean-Philip Desjardins. The project describes Play! as a PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows, macOS, UNIX, Android, iOS, and web browsers. The iOS build is not on the App Store; Apple’s allowance for retro-console emulator apps does not remove the JIT restriction.

For non-jailbroken iPhones on current iOS, the practical path is to install Play! with your own development signing and then attach a JIT enabler. SideStore includes an in-app JIT enabler; StikDebug is another documented route. Older Play! documentation also lists options such as AltServer JIT, Xcode debugger attachment, and jailbreak-based JIT. This guide focuses on SideStore with StikDebug because the steps are documented for current iOS versions.

How do you install Play! with SideStore and enable JIT?

Install SideStore first, then sideload the official Play! IPA and use StikDebug to enable JIT. Do not launch a game until JIT is active for Play!.

  1. Check whether your game is worth setting up. Search for the title in the Play! compatibility tracker. Compatibility is game-specific; a result for one title does not predict another game’s behavior.
  2. Install and pair SideStore. Follow SideStore’s current installation instructions at sidestore.io, using your own Apple ID. The first installation and pairing require a computer. SideStore’s in-app JIT option is an alternative to the StikDebug steps below, but do not assume both are needed at once.
  3. Download the official Play! IPA. Open the stable downloads page and download Play.ipa from the newest numbered folder. The latest stable release recorded on 27 October 2026 was version 0.72, released in January 2026.
  4. Sideload Play!. In SideStore, open My Apps, tap +, and select the downloaded Play.ipa. Wait for installation to complete.
  5. Install StikDebug from an official source. Use the StikDebug GitHub project or the AltStore source at stikdebug.xyz. The latest release recorded in the 27 October 2026 setup guidance was version 3.1.15, dated 15 October 2026. Do not look for it in the App Store; its project README says it is no longer available there.
  6. Prepare StikDebug’s pairing and network requirements. Create or obtain a pairing file using the documented computer-based process, then enable LocalDevVPN on the iPhone and connect to Wi-Fi. StikDebug requires a pairing file and a loopback VPN such as LocalDevVPN to enable JIT.
  7. Turn on JIT for Play!. In StikDebug, tap Enable JIT and select Play!. If the operation reports a heartbeat error, check that Wi-Fi and the VPN are both on. A pairing file can stop working after an OS update, a device reset, or occasionally for other reasons; repeat the pairing process if needed.
  8. Copy your game image to Play!. Use the iPhone Files app or computer file sharing through Finder on Mac or Apple Devices/iTunes on Windows. Keep a BIN file and its matching CUE file together. Play! documentation also points to Apple’s file-sharing instructions, including Apple Support HT201301 and HT210598.
  9. Pair your controller, then start the game. The controller steps are below. Once the game image is available, open Play! with JIT already enabled and launch the title. If you connect a physical pad, hide the on-screen controls if the app offers that option.
  10. Refresh SideStore’s signing. Refresh the sideloaded apps every seven days. If the signing expires, an app may stop opening until it is refreshed.

How do you connect a mobile controller to the iPhone?

Pair a Bluetooth controller in iPhone Settings, or attach a compatible clip-on controller to the phone. A PS2 game expects two analog sticks, shoulder buttons, and triggers, so a physical pad is more practical than touch controls for most games.

Pair a DualSense controller

Sony lists DualSense support for iOS 14.5 or later and says the controller can connect over Bluetooth or USB-C. To pair wirelessly, open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone and put the DualSense into pairing mode. Select it when it appears in the device list. Sony’s stated minimum also covers iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, and macOS 11.3; those platform versions do not change Play!’s separate JIT requirement on iPhone.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

The DualSense has the familiar PlayStation analog-stick layout and is the best-documented Bluetooth option in the sources for this setup. Do not assume that Play! on iOS supports DualSense haptics or adaptive triggers: that functionality is not established for this emulator.

Use an Xbox or MFi controller

Provenance lists Xbox and MFi controller support, and its Play! core offers analog-stick and trigger support through those controller classes. For an Xbox Wireless Controller, put the pad into pairing mode, then open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone and select it. MFi means a controller designed for Apple-device compatibility; check the controller’s own connection instructions if it uses a different pairing process.

Attach a clip-on iPhone controller

A Backbone One or a similar phone-mounted controller gives you physical buttons and analog sticks without having to place a separate Bluetooth pad on your lap. Backbone One versions use either Lightning or USB-C, so match the controller connector to your iPhone. The Razer Kishi Ultra is another USB-C clip-on option listed for this category. A clip-on device is especially useful if you want a handheld arrangement; it does not remove the need to sideload Play! or enable JIT.

Can you play with touch controls?

Play! has a virtual controller, and other iOS PS2 projects offer on-screen DualShock 2 controls. Touch buttons can be useful for checking that a game launches, but they take screen space and are less suited to games that depend on precise dual-stick movement and shoulder or trigger inputs. A physical controller is the more practical choice for a full play session.

Does Play! need a PS2 BIOS or downloaded game files?

Play! does not require an external PS2 BIOS. Its README says it uses a built-in high-level emulation BIOS and that an external BIOS file is neither necessary nor possible. You still need to provide your own game image; Play! does not supply PS2 games.

Use a disc image only if you are legally entitled to use the game, and check the law where you live. The cited setup guidance describes making an image from your own PS2 disc using a computer optical drive; downloading a copy of a game you do not own can violate copyright law. Do not download BIOS files or game images from unofficial “free” download sites.

For format choice, Provenance lists ISO, BIN/CUE, and CHD, and recommends CHD to save space in large collections. A BIN/CUE game uses two related files, so copy both and keep them together. CHD can reduce storage demands, but conversion is a separate step and the game image still takes space on the phone.

How compatible is PS2 emulation on an iPhone?

Compatibility depends on the game, the emulator build, the iPhone, and whether JIT is working. Use the Play! compatibility tracker for a specific title rather than relying on a blanket claim about the entire PS2 library.

Play!’s older project milestones show progress, but they are not a current iPhone success rate: version 0.52 release notes reported over 500 playable games (approximately 25%) in 2022; version 0.54 announced a 600-playable-games milestone in 2022; and version 0.61 said over 930 games had been confirmed playable since the previous update in 2023. Those are historical project figures, not a 2026 measurement of Play! on iPhone. No official 2026 percentage for the PS2 library playable on iPhone, or model-by-model frame-rate table, is established here.

A newer, faster device may help with demanding emulation, but it cannot guarantee that a particular game will be playable. Provenance recommends an iPhone 12 or newer, or an equivalent iPad, and notes that PS2 emulation is computationally demanding. There are no reliable model-specific performance, battery-life, or temperature figures to use as a promise. Save within the game regularly: emulator bugs can freeze a title and risk losing progress since the last save.

What should you check if a game will not start?

Work through the failure points in order: JIT, signing, pairing, and the game file. The most common setup mistake is treating a successful app installation as proof that JIT is enabled.

  • Play! closes or crashes when you launch a game: Return to StikDebug and confirm JIT was enabled for Play! after its latest installation or refresh. Play!’s README specifically warns that launching without JIT causes a crash.
  • StikDebug cannot enable JIT: Confirm that the app was installed with a development-signing method, that Wi-Fi is connected, and that LocalDevVPN is enabled. A distribution or enterprise certificate does not provide the needed JIT access.
  • The pairing file no longer works: Pair the device again if the file expired after an iOS update or reset. StikDebug’s current guidance also notes limited app availability on iOS 26 and later: developers may need to update apps before they work with that JIT path.
  • Play! opens, but a game is missing: Confirm the image copied into Play!’s files, use a supported format, and keep the BIN/CUE pair together. Large images may take time and storage to copy.
  • A game launches but behaves poorly: Check that title in the compatibility tracker. Compatibility varies by game; reinstalling the emulator or changing controller brands is not a general fix for an emulation limitation.
  • The app stops opening after several days: Refresh the SideStore signature. SideStore’s free-Apple-ID allowance is limited to three active sideloaded apps, including SideStore itself.

Are App Store PS2 emulators the same as Play!?

No. Play! is not an App Store app. Apple’s App Review Guidelines 4.7 allow retro game console and PC emulator apps to offer game downloads, but that policy does not grant ordinary App Store apps JIT access.

Provenance is an App Store frontend that includes Play!’s PS2 core, but PS2 games still need JIT. Its presence in the store does not bypass the JIT requirement; a sideloaded build with a JIT enabler or a jailbroken device is still needed for that core. Provenance also offers features such as save states, virtual memory cards, controller support, shaders, cheats, and fast forward. Those frontend features do not make the PS2 core a separate, more mature emulator.

Delta is not a PS2 emulator. Its supported systems include Nintendo and Sega consoles such as NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, DS, N64, and Genesis/Mega Drive, but not PlayStation 2. App Store search results with “PS2 emulator” in the name are not automatically Play!; check the developer, reviews, and in-app purchases, and be wary of apps offering game downloads.

What are the alternatives if native Play! is not a good fit?

If Play! cannot run a particular game well on your iPhone, the most established alternative described here is to run PCSX2 on a computer and stream the game to the phone. That is remote play, not PS2 emulation on the iPhone itself.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Stream PCSX2 from a computer

Run PCSX2 on a PC or Mac, then stream to the iPhone with Steam Link or Moonlight. A Backbone One or Bluetooth controller can provide the input. This route moves the emulation workload to the computer and can be preferable when native iPhone compatibility is incomplete, but it depends on having the computer available and a workable network connection.

Consider experimental iOS projects cautiously

Cascade is an unofficial iOS PS2 project for iOS 16 and later. Its README describes an interpreter with block-recompiling JIT and a JIT-less fallback, Metal graphics, ISO/BIN-CUE/CHD v5 support, and on-screen or Bluetooth controller options. Unlike Play!, Cascade requires a legally dumped PS2 BIOS. It can be sideloaded through methods including AltStore/SideStore, TrollStore, or Sideloadly, but it should be treated as an experimental alternative, not as the official iOS Play! build.

Community projects such as iPSX2 and ARMSX2 also appear in current coverage, but they are less established than Play! and should not be mistaken for official PCSX2 releases. For a dependable decision, check each project’s own current documentation, device requirements, and game-specific compatibility before investing time in setup.

How do you choose the right setup route?

For most readers who want PS2 games to run locally on an iPhone, Play! with a development-signed install and JIT is the route to start with. Choose based on how much setup you accept and whether you need the game to run on the phone itself.

  • Choose SideStore plus Play! if you want the official native iOS build without jailbreaking and are willing to manage JIT, pairing, and periodic signing refreshes.
  • Choose Provenance if you want an App Store frontend for several systems and understand that its PS2 core still requires JIT; an App Store installation alone is not sufficient for PS2.
  • Choose PCSX2 streaming if native iPhone compatibility is not adequate for your game and you have a computer to run the emulator.
  • Watch experimental projects if you want to explore unofficial alternatives and are comfortable with less-established compatibility and setup paths.

Do not use a shared-certificate installer such as Scarlet for Play!. It may install the IPA, but shared distribution signing cannot give the app JIT, so a PS2 game will fail at launch. Likewise, do not mistake Delta for a PS2 option or assume that an emulator’s appearance in the App Store solves the JIT problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a PS4 DualShock 4 with an iPhone PS2 emulator?

Cascade’s README names DualShock 4 as a supported MFi/Bluetooth controller for that unofficial project. For the official Play! build, the most clearly documented iPhone pairing route in this guide is DualSense; confirm controller recognition with your chosen app before relying on a specific older pad.

Does DualSense adaptive trigger support work in Play! on iPhone?

It is not established for Play! on iOS, so do not choose the controller on the assumption that adaptive triggers or haptics will function in emulated games. Basic controller input is the relevant feature for PS2 play.

Can a Nintendo Switch Pro controller work with an iPhone PS2 emulator?

Cascade lists Switch Pro among its Bluetooth controller options. That is a project-specific statement, not a guarantee of support in Play! or every iOS emulator frontend.
