Start with the disc, not the laser. Check that it is a compatible format, correctly oriented, clean, and undamaged; then test another known-good PS2 game and, if available, a music CD and DVD movie. If one game fails in more than one PS2, the disc is the likelier cause. If several clean, compatible discs fail in the same console, investigate the console only after these checks.
What should I check first when a PS2 cannot read a disc?
A “Disc Read Error” or a game that skips does not prove the laser has failed. Sony’s guidance starts with disc type, condition, and orientation. Its SCPH-90004 quick reference is for a specific European-region model, so check your console’s own manual for model-specific details; the basic disc-care advice is useful across the troubleshooting process.
- Confirm the disc type. Make sure it is a format the console can play. A DVD-video problem is not automatically the same as a PS2 game-disc fault: DVD region restrictions or an unfinalized recordable DVD can affect movie playback.
- Check how the disc is seated. On a tray-loading model, place the disc label-side up and ensure it sits flat before closing the tray. Follow the markings and instructions for your particular console.
- Inspect the reading surface. Look for dirt, scratches, cracks, or other damage. Avoid playing a disc that is visibly damaged or has been repaired; Sony cautions against using damaged or repaired discs.
- Clean it gently if needed. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Wipe from the center toward the outer edge rather than rubbing in circles. Sony’s manual says to wipe outward from the center, and Rockstar Support recommends a dry, lint-free cloth for skipping or freezing.
- Retest with comparisons. Try a known-good PS2 game. If possible, also try a music CD and DVD movie, and test the suspect game in another PS2.
Sony’s disc-care and safety instructions are in its SCPH-90004 quick reference. Rockstar’s support article, PS2 troubleshooting: disc read and graphics problems, also asks which types of discs work. Do not use tape, solvents, or abrasive household cloths on a disc.
How can I tell whether the disc or the console is at fault?
Compare the same disc across consoles and several known-good discs in the problem console. These comparisons help isolate the likely source, but a difference between CD and DVD playback does not, by itself, identify a failed part.

Keep a short record of the results rather than relying on memory: list each known-good game, whether it starts and continues, and whether a CD or DVD movie works. Rockstar specifically asks about these disc categories. The results narrow the possibilities, but they do not prove that a particular laser, motor, or connection is defective.
What should I do if only one PS2 game skips or freezes?
Concentrate on that disc first. If the fault follows it to another PS2 after a careful cleaning, a replacement copy is a more appropriate next step than opening a console that reads other discs normally.
Clean and inspect the disc
Hold the disc by its edge and check both the surface and center area for dirt or damage. Wipe the reading side from the center outward with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, then try it again. Do not use a circular scrubbing motion, tape, solvent, or a rough cloth. Do not assume a disc-repair or resurfacing kit is safe: Sony warns against playing damaged or repaired discs.

If the same title fails on a second console while other known-good discs play, the evidence points toward the disc. If it works elsewhere, return attention to the original console and compare its results with other compatible games and media. A single successful or failed comparison is useful evidence, but it is not a part-level diagnosis.
What if several games fail, or CDs work but DVDs do not?
When multiple clean, compatible discs fail in one console, move from disc care to console-level checks. Note whether PS2 games, music CDs, and DVD movies behave differently; a CD/DVD split can help narrow the fault, but it does not establish that the laser alone is responsible.

Check whether the disc spins and the tray closes properly
Watch and listen during a normal attempt to start a disc. If the disc never spins, check that it is seated correctly and that the lid or tray closes as intended. On the SCPH-7500x Slim specifically, iFixit identifies lid-detection sensors as a possible check when a disc does not spin. That guidance is model-scoped: do not assume the sensor locations or repair steps apply to another Slim or to a fat PS2.
A sticking tray on a fat PS2 is a different symptom from a Slim lid-detection problem. iFixit has a community guide for replacing a belt in a fat-console tray mechanism. Identify the console and match the symptom before following either guide; a belt replacement is not a general fix for read errors.
Consider connections as well as the pickup
If the drive spins but several compatible discs still fail after non-invasive checks, a damaged pickup or a broken connection may be among the possibilities. iFixit lists both types of fault in its troubleshooting material. CD and DVD behavior can be recorded as a clue, but it is not enough to select a replacement part without confirming the console revision and installed assembly.
Why does my PS2 start skipping after a long play session?
If skipping or freezing appears after extended use, let the console cool and make sure its ventilation is unobstructed. These steps address heat and airflow concerns; they do not guarantee a cure if the pickup or another component is failing.
Rockstar Support’s PS2 skipping / freezing issues guidance recommends checking the console’s surroundings and allowing it to cool. Keep objects from blocking ventilation and avoid enclosing the console in a way that prevents airflow. Retest after it has cooled, using the same disc and then a known-good comparison disc so you can tell whether the symptom changes.

What if the PS2 was moved from a cold place to a warm room?
Sony warns that condensation can temporarily disrupt operation after a console is brought from a cold environment into a warm one. In that situation, remove the disc, switch off and unplug the console, and wait for the condensation to evaporate before trying again.

Can a settings change fix a PS2 disc read error?
Do not treat a settings change as the main fix for a scratched PS2 game or a worn optical pickup. A Sony guide for the SCPH-90002 and SCPH-90003 documents a Console Diagnosis option, but the nearby PlayStation Driver speed and texture settings are described as optimizing PlayStation-format software, not as repairing PS2 game discs.
Older support guidance may suggest menu adjustments, but the manual’s distinction matters: settings intended for PlayStation-format software are not evidence that a PS2 game’s physical read problem has been fixed. Menu names and availability can vary by console model and region, so consult the manual for the exact unit rather than assuming another model’s path applies. Should I open the console to clean the lens?
Usually, not as an early troubleshooting step. Sony warns users not to disassemble the console or touch the lens, citing laser and electrical hazards. Internal cleaning and repair are optional, model-specific work for people willing to accept the risk; a repair specialist is the safer choice if you are unsure.

iFixit documents lens cleaning for the original PS2 and separately for a SCPH-70012 Slim. These procedures are not interchangeable. The original-console guide lists Phillips #1 and #00 screwdrivers, swabs, and rubbing alcohol; it calls for a lightly dampened swab and time for the lens to dry. The SCPH-70012 Slim guide also describes cleaning the sled track and warns about delicate ribbon cables and the risk of over-adjustment. Do not transfer a fat-console disassembly procedure to a Slim, or casually turn a potentiometer in an attempt to force a read.
Before opening any console, identify the complete SCPH model number on its label and use a guide written for that model. If you cannot identify the model, do not guess based on appearance alone. Sony’s safety warning remains the manufacturer’s direction; the iFixit material is an alternative repair reference, not a Sony-endorsed maintenance routine.

Consider pickup or mechanism work only after the disc checks and non-invasive comparisons point to the console, and after you have identified its exact revision. A replacement laser assembly is not a universal PS2 part: the available repair guide documents an original-PS2 replacement, but does not establish that one pickup SKU fits every revision.
If you choose a specialist, provide the model number and your comparison results: which known-good games work, whether CDs and DVD movies play, whether the disc spins, and whether the problem follows one title to another PS2. That information helps distinguish a disc issue from a tray, sensor, connection, or optical-drive problem without presuming the laser is at fault.

Choose the least invasive option supported by the symptoms. Cleaning a disc is a sensible first step for a suspected disc problem; internal work becomes relevant only when comparisons indicate a console fault.
