Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) 7.4 was released on March 23, 2023. Its most visible usability addition was “Proxmox Dark,” an integrated dark theme for the web interface that could follow your operating system or browser’s color preference—or be switched manually. The release also updated core virtualization components and added several management features. VE 7.4 is a historical release, not a guide to choosing a current installation.
What dark mode does in Proxmox VE 7.4
Proxmox Dark is a color-scheme variant of the VE web interface. It changes the interface’s appearance; it is not a separate product and does not add or alter virtualization capabilities.
According to Proxmox’s VE 7.4 release announcement, the interface detects a light or dark preference through the CSS prefers-color-scheme media feature, which reflects the operating system or browser setting. Users can also change the color scheme manually in the web interface. The release announcement does not specify a more detailed click-by-click path for the manual switch.
The dark theme in the VE web interface is distinct from the dark-mode feature for the Proxmox Community Forum mentioned in Proxmox’s VE 7.4 training summary.

Other notable changes in the 7.4 release
Proxmox described VE 7.4 as based on Debian 11.6 “Bullseye.” The following component versions are release-specific details, not recommendations for a new installation today.
| Area | VE 7.4 release detail |
|---|---|
| Linux kernel | 5.15 by default, with 6.2 available as an option |
| Virtualization and containers | QEMU 7.2 and LXC 5.0.2 |
| Storage | ZFS 2.1.9 |
| Ceph | Ceph Quincy 17.2.5 by default for new installations, or Ceph Pacific 16.2.11 as an option |
The announcement and official training summary also highlighted management improvements:
- Ceph OSD visibility: More detailed information about Ceph OSDs was exposed in the graphical interface and API.
- Task logs: Task logs could be downloaded as text files.
- Resource-tree sorting: The tree could be sorted by virtual machine name or VMID.
- Cluster Resource Scheduler: A feature could automatically rebalance virtual machines and containers when they start.
What VE 7.4 means for an upgrade today
Proxmox’s June 22, 2023 announcement for VE 8.0 stated that an upgrade path was included for users of VE 7.4 or older. That is historical context, not current upgrade guidance. The 2023 notices do not establish which versions are supported now or what repository and security-update status applies today. Before changing a live host, consult the current official Proxmox VE documentation and verify the supported source and destination versions, repositories, backups, and cluster or application requirements.
