Microsoft has not yet identified supported PC stores or games, published final specifications, or announced a consumer release date or price. The 2027 milestone is for alpha hardware planned for developers, not a retail launch.
What is Project Helix?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s codename for its next-generation first-party Xbox console. Xbox Vice President Jason Ronald announced the name and broad direction in a March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire post about GDC.

Ronald said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” That establishes Microsoft’s intended platform capability; it does not specify how every PC game will be installed, launched, or supported.
What has Microsoft confirmed about games and hardware?
Xbox and PC games are the stated goal
Microsoft describes Helix as being designed to play Xbox console and PC games. It has not named supported PC storefronts, launchers, or a complete list of compatible PC games. The announcement therefore does not establish that Steam, any other specific store, or every Windows PC game will work.

Custom AMD silicon, without retail specifications
Microsoft says the console is powered by a custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. An April 30, 2026 Microsoft Game Dev update also describes a custom AMD-based SoC and next-generation DirectX design. These platform-level details do not identify a consumer CPU or GPU model, or provide final CPU, GPU, memory, storage, or performance specifications.
A broad commitment to older Xbox games
Xbox says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. The announcement does not list the individual games covered, so it should be read as a broad commitment rather than a title-by-title compatibility guarantee.

When will Project Helix come out?
Xbox says alpha versions of the hardware are planned to ship to developers beginning in 2027. That is a development milestone, not a promised consumer release date. The official sources cited here do not give a retail launch window or price.
Will Project Helix play Steam games?
Microsoft has not confirmed Steam support, or support for any other named PC storefront. Saying that Helix is designed to play PC games is not enough to conclude that a particular store, launcher, or game will be available. Wait for Microsoft to publish storefront and compatibility details before treating a specific PC library as supported.

Is Project Helix a PC or a console?
Microsoft calls it a next-generation first-party Xbox console, while also saying it is designed to play PC games. The announcement presents a console with a wider stated game target; it does not settle the technical details of its operating system, storefront access, or how PC games will run. A related Windows feature announced at GDC should not be mistaken for a Helix system specification.

Xbox’s March 2026 announcement frames Helix as part of a broader effort to make play more consistent across screens. Ronald said Xbox is “breaking down the barriers between console and PC games for more seamless cross-device play.” That ecosystem direction is not the same as a promise that every game, store, or subscription will be supported on Helix.

Xbox Play Anywhere is a separate program
Xbox says supported Play Anywhere games can move across screens with progress carried over, and need to be purchased once. In its March 2026 post, Xbox reported more than 1,500 games in the program and 500 development teams that had shipped Play Anywhere games. Those figures describe that program’s reported catalog and participating teams; they do not establish Helix compatibility for all PC games or storefronts.
Windows 11 Xbox mode is not a Helix specification
In the same GDC post, Xbox said Windows 11 Xbox mode would begin rolling out in April 2026 in select markets. Microsoft describes it as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience that keeps Windows open and flexible. This is a Windows feature, not a detailed description of Helix’s operating system or confirmation of accessory compatibility.

- Consumer release date and price.
- Final CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and performance specifications.
- Supported PC storefronts, launchers, and individual PC games.
- A complete list of Xbox games covered by the four-generation playability commitment.
- Compatibility of particular controllers or other accessories.
