Project Helix is Microsoft’s announced next-generation Xbox project, but it is not yet a fully specified console you can buy. Xbox says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, uses a custom AMD chip, and is targeting a major ray-tracing advance. Developer alpha hardware is planned for 2027; that is not a consumer release date. Xbox Series X, by contrast, is available now with published specifications. Whether to buy one or wait depends on how soon you want a console and what details about Helix matter most to you.
What is Project Helix?
Microsoft describes Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console project, which is in development. Xbox says it is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. That is an announced goal, not a complete compatibility promise: Microsoft has not specified how every existing game, PC storefront, launcher, accessory, or operating mode will work.
Xbox says Helix is built around a custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC), co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) work. Microsoft’s developer update also describes an AMD-based SoC. These details establish the broad technology direction, not the finished hardware configuration. Xbox’s March 2026 announcement and Microsoft’s April 2026 developer update provide the official descriptions.
Jason Ronald, Xbox’s Vice President of Next Generation, said Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” This is Xbox’s statement of intent; “leading performance” is not an independently measured result. The full announcement also describes the company’s performance ambition as an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” Xbox has not published a test method or final CPU, GPU, memory, or clock-speed specifications alongside that claim, so it should not be read as a verified Series X comparison.

The Series X figures in the table are Xbox’s published capabilities and specifications, not a controlled comparison with Helix. The company has not released enough Helix hardware detail—or independent Helix test results—to support a meaningful side-by-side performance verdict. Series X availability and its official overview are on Xbox’s product page; its 2020 specification overview is in Xbox Wire’s Series X article.
When will Project Helix come out?
Xbox plans to begin shipping alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers in 2027. This is a planned developer milestone, not a retail launch window. In coverage of a Game File interview, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was not ready to share a launch timeline. The same report notes that memory costs could affect pricing and availability. Neither a consumer release year nor a price is established. Windows Central’s interview coverage reports those remarks.

Will Project Helix be a family of devices, and will it have a disc drive?
A September 2026 MeriStation report on an interview with Sharma says she described Helix as a “family of devices.” The report does not specify how many models there will be, their configurations, or when any might launch. It does not confirm a handheld, a lower-cost tier, or a particular upgrade path.
The same report says Sharma discussed players’ preference for physical media and the value of choice. It does not establish whether any Helix model will include a disc drive or explain the final physical-game policy. If you rely on discs, wait for a specific model’s confirmed specifications rather than assuming a drive will be offered. MeriStation’s September 1, 2026 report covers the interview.

Should you buy an Xbox Series X now or wait for Helix?
Buy Series X if you want a console now
Series X is the practical option if you want to play today, value its available library, or do not want to wait for an unannounced retail date. Xbox says it supports thousands of games across four generations, and it publishes the console’s capabilities and specifications. Check the current price and model details in your market before buying.
Wait if the unknowns could change your decision
Waiting makes sense if you can keep playing on your current device and want to know Helix’s retail timing, price, final specifications, game compatibility, and model options before choosing. Those details are not established yet. A developer alpha in 2027 does not tell consumers when they will be able to purchase the system.

Neither statement confirms that these products will work with Project Helix; wait for Helix-specific compatibility information before planning to carry accessories forward. See Xbox’s Series X product information for the current console’s storage and accessory details.
