Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory and discovers that a substance is causing the sun to die. He must find a way to solve the mystery, and an unexpected friendship may help him try to save Earth.
Why is it being called a major sci-fi movie of 2026?
Amazon MGM Studios reported that the film had earned more than $680 million worldwide, including more than $343 million in the United States and Canada, after its March 20 domestic debut. Amazon’s July 2026 article described it as the year’s third-highest-grossing movie at that time. Those are figures and a ranking reported in that update, not a live box-office tally or proof that it leads every 2026 science-fiction release.

Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace. The cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the film, and Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The movie adapts Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, which is available in physical-book, Kindle, and Audible editions. Amazon reported in 2026 that the audiobook had sold more than 2 million copies and that it won the 2022 Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year. How does its streaming release compare with other 2026 sci-fi films?
Streaming dates differ from title to title. Peacock’s official page listed October 9, 2026, as the streaming start for Disclosure Day, a separate Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi film. Its listed date is not a viewing option for Project Hail Mary, which Amazon says is already on Prime Video.
Home formats also vary by film. StarWars.com listed digital, Disney+, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and collector editions for the separate 2026 film The Mandalorian and Grogu; that announcement does not establish that Project Hail Mary has those formats.
