Java’s standard XML APIs let you parse documents as an in-memory tree or process them as a stream. Use DOM when you need to navigate or edit the document structure; use StAX for controlled, stateful streaming; and consider SAX for callback-driven, one-pass processing. For untrusted XML, configure external-resource access deliberately—secure-processing mode alone does not necessarily block it.
What JAXP provides
JAXP, the Java API for XML Processing, is the Java-facing family of APIs for parsing and processing XML. It includes DOM, SAX, StAX, namespace support, and XSLT transformation. The APIs are documented in the Java SE java.xml module and Oracle’s JAXP tutorial.
In common factory-based code, DOM uses DocumentBuilderFactory and DocumentBuilder; SAX uses SAXParserFactory and SAXParser; and XSLT uses transformation factories. JAXP provider lookup can select an implementation at runtime, so confirm behavior against the Java runtime and provider your application actually uses. The Java SE 17 module documentation describes the APIs in that release: java.xml module summary.
DOM, SAX, or StAX: which should you choose?
| Model | How processing works | Access and memory | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOM | The parser builds a document tree in memory. | Supports navigation across the tree and structural edits; storing the whole document can require substantial memory for large inputs. | Repeated or random access, or when you need to inspect and modify document structure. |
| SAX | The parser pushes events to application callbacks as it reads the XML serially. | Processes a stream without a convenient rewind or arbitrary navigation facility. | One-pass, callback-oriented processing where the logic does not need to revisit earlier structure. |
| StAX | Your application pulls the next event from the XML stream. | Streaming model: the application generally works with one location at a time rather than a complete in-memory tree. | Controlled streaming when processing decisions depend on state or earlier events. |
Oracle’s tutorials describe the individual models: DOM, SAX, and StAX. Oracle’s StAX tutorial describes it as enabling “bidrectional XML parsers that are fast, relatively easy to program, and have a light memory footprint.” Treat that as the tutorial’s description, not a guarantee that StAX will outperform another model for every workload.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose DOM for tree access
DOM is the natural fit when code needs to find elements in different parts of a document, revisit nodes, or change the document structure. Its convenience comes with a cost: the parser holds a tree representation, so large documents may demand substantial memory.
Choose StAX for stateful streaming
With StAX, application code asks for the next event instead of receiving parser callbacks. That pull model can make it easier to express logic that depends on what has already been encountered while retaining a streaming approach.

Choose SAX for callback-oriented streaming
SAX calls application handlers as parsing progresses. It suits serial processing when callback-based logic is convenient and the application does not need to navigate backward through the document.
There is no universally fastest choice established by these API descriptions. Performance depends on the workload, provider, document size, and implementation; choose based on access and processing needs rather than assuming one model wins every benchmark.

How to parse XML with a standard Java factory
The factory pattern gives Java code an implementation of the chosen API. This DOM example shows the basic shape for parsing a file; it does not configure a security policy and should not be treated as sufficient for untrusted input.
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
Document document = builder.parse(new File("input.xml"));
Use the corresponding SAX or StAX APIs when their processing model better matches the job. Factory lookup may select different providers, and behavior can vary with the runtime and provider. For production code, explicitly consider both the parser’s security settings and whether external resources are allowed.

Secure XML parsing requires an explicit external-resource policy
Untrusted XML is a security boundary. XML External Entity (XXE) processing can cause a parser to retrieve external material, while entity-expansion attacks—sometimes called XML bombs or “billion laughs”—can consume excessive resources. Oracle’s JAXP security guide for Java SE 26 discusses these risks and the controls available to JAXP applications.
The guide states that the JDK enables secure processing (FSP) by default for SAX, DOM, validation, and transformation factories. However, external connections are not disabled by default. Do not treat FSP alone as a guarantee that external access is blocked.

Apply and verify controls for the component in use
- Configure secure processing and external-access properties deliberately on the parser, validator, or transformer that handles the input.
- Decide whether external DTDs, schemas, stylesheets, or other resources are required. If they are, allow them through an intentional resolver or catalog policy rather than relying on unrestricted fetching.
- Check the relevant settings against the target Java release and the actual JAXP provider; provider behavior and supported properties can vary.
- Test the policy with representative documents, including inputs that attempt external entity access, under the runtime and provider used in deployment.
Security configuration is specific to the XML component and application policy, so there is no safe universal property snippet to apply blindly to every parser, validator, and transformer. The Java SE 26 guide is the relevant reference for that release; applications on other Java versions should consult the security documentation for their target runtime.
