Our verdict on YugabyteDB Aeon
YugabyteDB Aeon is a fully managed database-as-a-service for running YugabyteDB clusters on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. It is designed for teams building cloud-native transactional applications that need relational database capabilities with distributed deployment options. The service supports YSQL and YCQL client APIs, a web administration interface, single- and multi-region clusters, horizontal and vertical scaling, backups, read replicas, and fault tolerance across nodes, availability zones, and regions. It is proprietary rather than open source, and offers both a free Sandbox cluster and paid Dedicated clusters.
The plan structure maps capability to deployment scope. Sandbox provides a single-node cluster with up to 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of memory, and 10 GB of storage, with one Sandbox cluster per account. Standard adds single-region fault tolerance, core security and networking, horizontal and vertical scaling, automated upgrades, and automated backups. Professional moves to advanced multi-region capabilities, region-level resilience, scalability, and data residency support; business continuity and disaster recovery are available as an optional add-on. Enterprise includes advanced multi-region capabilities, higher performance and availability, and enterprise security features, with pricing handled through sales.
For operations, Aeon offers scheduled, incremental, and on-demand backups, point-in-time recovery, point-in-time database cloning, and read replicas for geographically distributed reads. Automation is available through a REST API, CLI, and Terraform, while ecosystem support includes PostgreSQL, Django, Hasura, and Spring alongside the three major cloud platforms. PostgreSQL extensions and Change Data Capture broaden its fit for existing application stacks. Choose Aeon if multi-cloud placement, regional resilience, and infrastructure automation are central requirements. Teams needing only a single-node development database or a simpler single-region managed database may find the broader distributed SQL feature set unnecessary.
