Our verdict on Yash

Yash is a C99 command-line shell for interactive use and scripting on POSIX-compatible systems. It is aimed at POSIX shell users who want familiar syntax alongside extensions such as arrays, global aliases, and extended globbing. Yash is open source under the GNU General Public License version 2, available as source code and through operating-system package managers, and can be self-hosted. Its package availability includes Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, macOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Gentoo; the vendor says it should build and run on POSIX.1-2001 environments.

Interactive work is a notable focus. Yash offers command-line completion scripts for more than 100 commands and prediction based on command history, with vi- or emacs-style line editing. Login and interactive startup behavior can be configured through `~/.yash_profile` and `~/.yashrc`. These features make it a fit for users who want a configurable terminal shell as well as a scripting environment. Its support channel is documentation, so it may be less suitable for buyers who expect a dedicated support team.

Yash’s appeal is its combination of POSIX-compliant syntax and additional shell capabilities, including socket, pipeline, and process redirection. Because the language extends POSIX shell syntax, teams that prioritize scripts constrained to standard POSIX behavior should consider whether those extensions fit their portability needs. It is distributed software rather than a paid-plan product, making it a candidate for individuals and organizations comfortable sourcing and managing their own shell. Choose Yash for its interactive prediction and extended syntax; choose a more strictly standard shell if extensions are unwelcome.
