Our verdict on xrdp
xrdp is an open-source Remote Desktop Protocol server for graphical access to GNU/Linux machines. It suits Linux administrators who need basic remote desktop connectivity through compatible clients such as Microsoft Remote Desktop, FreeRDP, rdesktop, KRDC or NeutrinoRDP. Distributed as source code and through major Linux distribution repositories, it provides a focused server component rather than a complete cross-platform remote access suite.
Its strongest case is the breadth of core RDP functions in a narrowly focused package. TLS-encrypted RDP transport is enabled by default, while two-way clipboard transfer includes files. Audio and microphone redirection, drive redirection for mounting local client drives, session reconnection and on-connect or on-the-fly resizing cover common administrative workflows. RDP/VNC proxying also gives it a role in environments that need to connect through different remote desktop protocols. These capabilities make xrdp more than basic screen access, while keeping the product centered on Linux graphical sessions.
The main trade-off is platform scope. xrdp runs as a Linux server component; Windows, macOS, iOS and Android support comes from compatible RDP clients, not native xrdp applications. It also lacks session recording, so teams that need cross-platform native apps or recorded sessions should choose a broader remote desktop product instead. Pick xrdp when open-source licensing, Linux repository availability and standard RDP access matter most. Choose an alternative when mobile applications, wider server-platform coverage or session recording are requirements.
