Our verdict on wolfSSH

wolfSSH is an ANSI C implementation of an SSHv2 client and server library from wolfSSL Inc. It is designed for embedded, RTOS, resource-constrained, and standard operating environments. Teams can integrate it into self-hosted products and applications that need secure shell access, SCP or SFTP transfers, remote command execution, port forwarding, and several authentication methods. Its supported environments include Linux, Windows, macOS, BSD, embedded Linux, and a broad range of embedded platforms and RTOS options.

Its strongest fit is embedded integration. The C language API supports product-level incorporation, while hardware cryptography acceleration and post-quantum hybrid key exchange address specialized implementation needs. Authentication options include passwords, keyboard-interactive methods, public keys, and X.509 certificates, with CA-root certificate validation available. wolfSSH also connects with wolfCrypt, wolfSSL, wolfTPM, and wolfBoot, giving teams using that ecosystem a clearer path to related cryptographic, TLS, TPM, and boot components.

wolfSSH is freely downloadable under GPLv3, while its published paid tiers are annual support and maintenance packages. Basic Support costs $2,600 per year and includes email-only support, three support incidents, and a three-business-day response time. Standard Support costs $8,500 per year with 10 incidents and a one-business-day response time. Premium Support costs $28,500 per year and adds phone support, unlimited incidents, a four-business-hour response time, and a dedicated support engineer. The $50,000-per-year 24x7 & Long Term Support plan adds 24x7 support, long-term support, and target hardware in nightly CI tests. Choose wolfSSH when embedded portability, a C API, and SSH feature coverage matter; consider another option if low-cost commercial support or a simpler deployment model is the priority.
