Our verdict on WebStorm
WebStorm is JetBrains' desktop integrated development environment for JavaScript, TypeScript, and related web technologies. It is aimed at developers who want code completion, code-quality inspections, navigation, refactoring, debugging, testing, version control, package management, and development tooling in one application. Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported, making it suitable for individual developers and organizations working across common desktop environments.
Its main strength is the breadth of its JavaScript and TypeScript workflow. Developers can debug JavaScript and Node.js with breakpoints and watches, run and debug tests with Jest, Mocha, Protractor, and Vitest, and work with Git and GitHub. npm, Yarn, and pnpm integrations support package management, while Docker images, containers, Docker Compose, and Dev Containers extend the environment into container-based projects. An integrated HTTP client, database tools, SQL support, and remote development with a local client and remote server make WebStorm a fit for projects that span application code, services, data, and infrastructure.
The licensing model is an important divider. The WebStorm Non-Commercial plan is free for learning, self-education, qualifying open-source contributions, content creation, and hobby development, and includes AI Free. Commercial individual development and organizational use are covered by the WebStorm Commercial plan, which includes a 30-day free trial, AI Free, and a perpetual fallback license with annual subscriptions. Support for the non-commercial plan is provided through public forums and a bug tracker. Choose WebStorm when an integrated, feature-rich JavaScript and TypeScript environment is useful; choose a lighter editor when you need only focused code editing or do not need its broader tooling.
