Our verdict on VICE
VICE is a free, open-source emulator collection for software made for Commodore 8-bit computers. It supports the C64, C64DTV, C128, VIC20, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II through separate emulators that share a common interface, settings and file formats. It is intended for retro-computing users, developers and preservationists who want Commodore emulation across Windows, macOS, Linux or Android.
Its depth is the main reason to consider it. VICE aims for cycle-accurate 6502/6510 CPU and chip-timing emulation, while also providing debugger and monitor tools for inspection and development. Media support covers disk, tape, cartridge and snapshot formats. Event-history recording and playback adds a way to capture and revisit emulator activity. CRT emulation, Scale2x and OpenGL rendering filters provide multiple display options, and Ethernet cartridge emulation extends its system-level feature set.
VICE is a strong fit for users who need detailed Commodore coverage rather than a general-purpose emulator. Network play between VICE instances is available, but it is documented as experimental and potentially unstable. System ROM files are required, and copyrighted ROM images are not provided. The software does not target arcade emulation, so users seeking broader hardware coverage should choose a different emulator. For Commodore-focused preservation, development or retro-computing, its open-source model and eight-system scope make it a focused option.
