Our verdict on Vallum
Vallum is a macOS application-layer firewall for users who want control over connections made by apps and system processes. It intercepts inbound and outbound traffic and supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Application, process, hostname, domain, port, protocol, developer, user, Wi-Fi, and network-interface conditions give it a broad rule set for personal firewall and privacy-control needs. Popup alerts notify users about connection requests, while persistent and temporary rules support different control levels.
Pricing is structured as one-time licenses. The Vallum 5 Single License costs $15, while the Five Licenses Family Pack costs $20. An Upgrade to Vallum 5 costs $7.50 for eligible Vallum or Murus Pro Bundle customers. The official page also lists a 15-day trial, and prices exclude VAT. There is no free plan. For an individual Mac user, the single license offers a low entry price; households or users covering multiple Macs can consider the five-license pack.
Vallum’s standout strength is the combination of detailed matching and live traffic visibility. Its flow monitor can review connections and block them on the fly, while apps groups and developer-based rules help organize decisions beyond simple application names. Location-aware rules add control based on Wi-Fi and network interfaces. The trade-off is scope: Vallum is designed for macOS and does not provide central management or integrations. It suits Mac users who want granular local filtering at a one-time price, but organizations needing cross-device administration or connected security workflows should choose a product built for those requirements.
