Our verdict on TypeDB

TypeDB is a structured hypergraph database for applications that model complex, interconnected domains. It represents entities, relations, and attributes as typed data, with schemas and constraints enforced during writes. TypeQL provides schema and data queries, while pattern matching supports graph-shaped data. TypeDB suits teams building knowledge graphs or domain models where explicit relationships, controlled structure, and transactional consistency matter. It is available through a free open-source Community Edition, managed Cloud service, and self-managed Enterprise edition.

Pricing spans three plans. Explore is free forever at $0 per hour and includes a fully managed service, a dedicated database server, and 10 GB of storage; no card details are required. Launch starts at $0.16 per hour and adds dedicated database servers, horizontal scaling up to 7 servers, up to 1 TB of storage, and additional compute up to 16 vCPUs. Enterprise supports deployment on-premises or in a private cloud, air-gapped environments, custom horizontal scaling, storage and compute, and 24/7 support with P1 escalation. The hourly Launch pricing suits usage-based evaluation, while Enterprise is aimed at organizations with controlled deployment and support requirements.

Its strongest distinction is the typed modeling approach: schema inheritance and constraints are enforced on writes, and ACID transactions extend up to snapshot isolation. Platform access includes Web Studio, Console, an HTTP API, and drivers for Python, TypeScript, Rust, Java, C, and C#. Clusters provide replication and automatic failover, with scheduled backups for scaled TypeDB Cloud clusters. The trade-off is a narrower feature profile for teams seeking built-in graph algorithms; native vector type and cosine-similarity search are still alpha. Choose TypeDB for constraint-driven graph modeling and flexible deployment, but consider alternatives if graph analytics or mature vector search is central.
