Our verdict on Twine

Twine is an open-source command-line utility for publishing Python packages to PyPI and other Python package indexes. It is designed for Python developers and release automation workflows that need to upload source and binary distribution artifacts independently of the build system. The tool supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it suitable for cross-platform publishing tasks.

Twine’s strongest capability is its publishing workflow. It supports PyPI, TestPyPI, devpi, and configurable repository names and URLs, including private package indexes. Before uploading, it can check distribution metadata and verify long-description rendering. Upload workflows can also skip existing files, which is useful when working with repositories that already contain some artifacts. Configuration can be supplied through .pypirc files or environment variables, while verified HTTPS connections support secure repository interaction.

For release integrity, Twine supports GPG signing, pre-signed files, and upload attestations. That gives teams options for adding verification steps around package publication without tying uploads to a specific build system. Its scope is intentionally narrow: Twine publishes distributions, but it does not resolve dependencies, manage environments, provide lockfiles, or organize dependency groups. Choose it when package publication is the main requirement, especially for PyPI, TestPyPI, or alternative index workflows. Choose a broader package management tool when dependency resolution or environment management is central to the workflow.
