Our verdict on uv

uv is an open-source Python package and project manager from Astral, written in Rust. It is aimed at developers and teams managing dependencies, virtual environments, Python versions, command-line tools, packages, and multi-package repositories. The project runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and combines dependency resolution, installation, project management, script execution, package building, and a pip-compatible interface in one tool.

Its ecosystem fit is a central strength. uv works with PyPI, private package indexes, Git repositories, and local paths, while supporting private-index configuration and authentication. Universal, cross-platform lockfiles address reproducible dependency management across supported operating systems. Cargo-style workspaces extend that model to multi-package repositories, and dependency resolution covers both direct and transitive dependencies. Local caching and offline operation add a useful path for environments that need to reuse downloaded packages without an active connection.

The breadth also defines the product’s trade-off. Alongside package installation, uv handles Python version installation and management, command-line tool installation and execution, virtual environments, source distributions, wheels, and package publishing workflows. That makes it a strong fit for teams seeking one Python-focused toolchain, especially when projects span multiple packages or require private indexes. A narrower package manager may be easier to evaluate for users who only need basic installation, while teams working outside Python will need a different category of tool. Package output centers on wheels and source distributions, and the primary supported platforms are macOS, Linux, and Windows.
