Our verdict on Tsuru

Tsuru is an open-source Platform as a Service for teams that want to deploy and manage applications on infrastructure they control. It supports applications written in different languages and frameworks, with deployment from source code, Dockerfiles, or container images. Kubernetes provides the orchestration layer, while the CLI covers application lifecycle management, troubleshooting, routing, service bindings, and cluster administration. Linux, macOS, Windows, self-hosted environments, and an API are supported. The clearest fit is an open-source team with Kubernetes capability and a preference for avoiding proprietary platform lock-in.

Its strongest technical area is deployment and application operations across infrastructure boundaries. Teams can autoscale application units, configure routers, connect services through bindings and environment variables, and manage applications across multiple clusters or regions. Container image building and registry integration support image-based workflows alongside source deployments. That combination makes Tsuru broader than a deployment-only tool, particularly for organizations that need a consistent PaaS layer over Kubernetes environments. Multi-cluster and multi-region management also gives it a practical fit for distributed application operations.

The trade-off is ownership. Tsuru is self-hosted open-source software, so the operating team takes responsibility for running and administering the platform rather than selecting a vendor-hosted plan. Its CLI and cluster-management capabilities are well suited to technical teams, but may be less appropriate for organizations seeking a fully managed service. Managed databases are not part of the listed platform capabilities, and the verified integration list is empty, so teams with specific ecosystem requirements should assess their own integration work before choosing it. Tsuru makes the most sense for Kubernetes-oriented teams that value control; teams seeking managed infrastructure or built-in database services should consider alternatives.
