Our verdict on TreeLine

TreeLine is a free, open-source desktop outliner and personal information manager for organizing notes, lists, contacts, bookmarks, and other structured information. It represents content as hierarchical nodes in expandable and collapsible trees, with breadcrumbs, filtering, search, and previous or next selection navigation. The application is suited to people who want an offline workspace for information that benefits from a clear tree structure rather than a flat note list.

Its strongest distinction is the depth of its information model. Users can define node types, fields, and output formats, then connect nodes with internal links or point to external URLs and files. Cloned nodes can appear in multiple tree locations, while configurable searches and filters help navigate larger collections. TreeLine also supports JSON-based files with optional compression and encryption, undo and redo for modifying operations, and printing or PDF output. This makes it useful across several structured-information scenarios without limiting the application to a single note format.

The published platform coverage is Windows and Linux, with official installers and source packages provided for those systems. Import and export options include HTML, plain text, tab-indented text, CSV, tab-delimited text, TreeLine, XML, ODF, Mozilla HTML bookmarks, XBEL, and PDF. That breadth suits users moving information between tools or producing shareable documents. Choose TreeLine if configurable hierarchical data, offline access, and open-source software are priorities. Consider another option if you need a browser-based workspace or a product centered on a different organizational model.
