Our verdict on ThingsBoard

ThingsBoard is an open-source IoT platform for connecting devices, collecting telemetry, processing events, managing assets, and building interactive dashboards. It is aimed at IoT developers, pilot teams, and organizations managing production deployments. Device connectivity covers MQTT, HTTP, CoAP, and LwM2M, while the platform supports web, desktop, mobile, API, and self-hosted access. Its scope suits teams that need monitoring and analytics alongside device and asset management rather than a narrow dashboarding tool.

Pricing is structured around monthly plans. Free includes 5 devices, 5 assets, 1M data points per month, and community support. Prototype costs $49 per month and adds capacity for 50 devices, 50 assets, and 10M data points per month for PoCs and MVPs. Pilot is $149 per month with 100 devices, 100 assets, 100M data points per month, a help desk, and white labeling. Startup is $399 per month for 500 devices, 500 assets, and 500M data points per month, with priority help desk support and white labeling. Business is $749 per month for 1,000 devices, 1,000 assets, 1B data points per month, priority help desk support, and white labeling.

The platform’s strongest differentiator is its breadth. Rule Engine processing supports automation, dashboards can use custom widgets and layouts, and alarms and notifications support operational monitoring. Trendz Analytics adds visualization, prediction, calculated fields, and anomaly detection, with machine learning and real-time stream processing included in the category capabilities. Integrations include AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, Google Cloud Pub/Sub, Kafka, RabbitMQ, OPC-UA, and LoRaWAN ecosystem services such as ChirpStack and The Things Stack. Choose ThingsBoard for broad IoT coverage and deployment flexibility; choose a narrower product if you only need basic device dashboards.
