Our verdict on Tetragon
Tetragon is an open-source security observability and runtime enforcement tool from Cilium. It is designed for Linux teams that need programmable monitoring of process execution, system calls, file activity, and network activity. Kubernetes-aware policies can use namespaces, pods, and containers as workload identities, making the product a fit for teams operating containerized workloads while retaining control over enforcement in the Linux kernel.
Its standout capability is custom runtime policy design. TracingPolicy resources support kprobe, tracepoint, and uprobe hooks, while enforcement can use return-value overrides and signals. This gives security teams a way to define controls around specific kernel and application events rather than relying only on fixed detections. JSON event output and gRPC access support integration with surrounding systems, while Prometheus, Kubernetes, Helm, and Docker fit its operational ecosystem. Deployment options include Kubernetes Helm, containers, and released Linux packages.
Tetragon’s focus is narrower than a platform that covers the full software supply chain. It is suited to runtime observability, Kubernetes identity policies, and programmable enforcement, but teams seeking image scanning, registry scanning, admission control, or user-facing SBOM generation should choose a product built around those workflows instead. The open-source, self-hosted model fits organizations that want deployment control and can operate Linux infrastructure. Teams primarily looking for managed security operations or broad pre-deployment coverage should consider an alternative.
