Our verdict on Test Kitchen

Test Kitchen is an open-source integration testing tool for infrastructure code. It creates or connects to isolated virtual machines, containers, or cloud instances, applies configuration through pluggable provisioners, and runs verification tests against the resulting systems. It is aimed at infrastructure developers and teams testing configuration workflows before deployment, with support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Chef Infra cookbooks, Ansible, PowerShell DSC, Puppet, and Salt are listed among its infrastructure-as-code uses.

Its main strength is breadth across infrastructure environments and testing stages. Test Kitchen supports drivers for Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, Google Compute Engine, DigitalOcean, OpenStack, Docker, Vagrant, VMware, and other listed platforms. A workflow can create and destroy isolated instances, converge infrastructure code, and verify the configured system. The verifier ecosystem includes Chef InSpec, Cinc Auditor, and Serverspec, while configurable platforms, suites, drivers, provisioners, and verifiers allow the testing arrangement to match different infrastructure workflows.

The trade-off is that Test Kitchen is a Ruby-based command-line tool with a local execution model. Installation is available as a Ruby gem or through Chef Workstation, so it fits teams prepared to manage that toolchain rather than teams seeking a hosted interface. Its open-source, Apache-licensed distribution makes it suitable for infrastructure developers who need multi-provider convergence and verification without a stated software charge. Choose it when isolated environment management and configurable infrastructure testing are priorities; consider another category option when hosted execution or a simpler setup is more important.
