Our verdict on Chef InSpec
Chef InSpec is an open-source compliance-as-code framework for security, DevOps, and compliance teams assessing applications, infrastructure, containers, cloud resources, and operating systems. It expresses security and compliance policies as executable code, compares actual system state with a desired state, detects violations, and produces audit reports. Assessments can run locally or remotely, with agentless scanning across Windows, macOS, and Linux. AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud resource packs extend coverage to cloud infrastructure.
The free plan gives teams a way to work with the framework before moving to commercial capabilities, and a 30-day free trial is available. The Business plan costs $59 USD per node per year with annual billing and includes node management, job orchestration, configuration management, compliance audit, and standard support. Enterprise costs $189 USD per node per year and adds continuous compliance plus InSpec and Infra skills. Enterprise Plus includes security and compliance requirements, cloud security posture management, and premium support. These tiers suit organizations that need progressively broader compliance operations rather than only local assessment.
Platform fit is a notable strength: Chef InSpec connects with SSH, WinRM, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, GitHub, and Jenkins, while CIS benchmark-aligned audit content supports established assessment workflows. Chef remediation content and scripts can address detected issues. The trade-off is that executable policies require technical ownership, and remote coverage depends on available access methods and APIs. Choose Chef InSpec when agentless assessment, policy-as-code, cloud coverage, and automated remediation matter. Consider another option if the priority is a predominantly point-and-click compliance tool with minimal policy authoring.
