Our verdict on Teleport
Teleport is an identity-based access platform for SSH servers and distributed infrastructure. It is designed for hobbyists, homelabs, small teams, and organizations managing production infrastructure with centralized access or compliance requirements. Alongside SSH access, it covers Kubernetes clusters, databases, internal applications, and desktops. Its access model uses short-lived SSH and X.509 certificates, per-session multi-factor authentication, role-based controls, audit event logging, and SSH session recording and replay.
The main distinction is its depth of access governance. Teams can define users, roles, allow and deny rules, resource labels, and Access Lists, then review recorded sessions and audit events. Integrations with GitHub, Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, SailPoint, OIDC, and SAML support identity-centered administration. Deployment can be cloud-hosted or self-hosted, and the published platform coverage includes Linux, macOS, Windows, Docker, Amazon EC2, and web browsers. This makes Teleport a fit when SSH access needs to connect with broader identity and infrastructure controls rather than remain a standalone server service.
Pricing is structured around a free Community Edition and commercial Enterprise editions. Community Edition is free, open source, and self-hosted, with secure SSH access. Enterprise Edition Standard adds Teleport Zero Trust Access, Machine & Workload Identity, and Identity Governance, while Enterprise Edition Premium adds Identity Security; both Enterprise plans use usage-based pricing. A 14-day free trial is also available. Choose Teleport when certificate-based access, MFA, session oversight, and centralized policy matter. Choose a simpler SSH daemon when the requirement is only direct server access without an access governance layer.
