Our verdict on Tabletop Simulator

Tabletop Simulator is a desktop sandbox for playing tabletop games online or locally, aimed at board-game groups, roleplaying groups, and creators who want to prototype or publish digital tabletop experiences. Physics-based object interaction, hotseat multiplayer, and support for up to 10 players give groups different ways to play. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with virtual reality support also available.

Its defining strength is flexibility: players can import custom boards, decks, models, and other assets, while Steam Workshop support brings in user-created content. Lua scripting supports customized experiences, and games and objects can be saved and loaded. Built-in voice and text chat keep communication in the tabletop environment. The RPG Kit and game-master controls add tools for roleplaying sessions, including control over tables and the ability to build dungeons. That breadth suits groups comfortable shaping their own play space; it may be less suitable for buyers seeking a guided campaign or rules-focused system.

The product is sold as a one-time purchase, with a separate four-copy package for groups buying together; there is no free plan. Steam Cloud and Steam multiplayer complement Workshop support, tying its ecosystem to Steam. Community support and documentation are the listed support channels. Choose Tabletop Simulator if custom assets, physics, scripting, and varied game formats matter more than a narrowly designed tabletop experience. Groups that want campaign structure and rules support built specifically for their game should consider a more purpose-built alternative.
