Our verdict on Roll20
Roll20 is a browser-based virtual tabletop for online tabletop games, including Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, and more than 1,200 other game systems. It supports online hosting without downloads or separate hosting, with character sheets, character tracking, dice rolling, campaign organization, map tools, dynamic lighting, fog of war, text chat, and integrated voice and video. It fits groups that want a broad, free starting point for browser-based campaigns, as well as game masters who need structured tools for managing games and assets.
The free plan provides online hosting, unlimited players and games, access to more than 1,200 game systems, and 100 MB of upload storage. According to the published plans, Plus starts at 5.99 and adds dynamic lighting, 4 GB of storage, shared content in up to 3 games, and support for up to 10 players per shared game. Pro adds API access, 10 GB of storage, custom character sheets, and Transmogrifier. Elite increases storage to 50 GB, includes Dungeon Scrawl Pro access, supports shared content in up to 20 games, and allows up to 15 players per shared game. The paid tiers suit groups that need more storage, sharing, customization, or automation.
Roll20’s strongest advantage is breadth within a browser: campaign pages, folders, asset management, rules and content compendiums, automated rolls, lighting, voice and video, and Pro API and mod access are combined in one service. Its ecosystem fit is narrower for users who require a dedicated native mobile app, since the current mobile experience is through a browser. Choose Roll20 for broad system coverage and layered campaign tools without downloads. Groups seeking native mobile applications or a simpler, more focused tabletop experience should consider alternatives that prioritize those needs.
