Our verdict on Sysbox

Sysbox is an open-source Linux container runtime for teams that need to run system-level workloads inside containers. Its VM-like system containers support systemd, Docker, Kubernetes, K3s, BuildKit, and legacy applications without requiring privileged containers. The runtime is aimed at platform engineers, CI environments, development teams, and infrastructure operators working with nested container or Kubernetes workloads.

Its main distinction is the depth of system-container behavior. Sysbox combines Linux namespaces and user namespaces with procfs and sysfs virtualization, immutable initial mount restrictions, and selective system-call interception. Root can be mapped to an unprivileged host user, while container image preloading can use a Dockerfile or docker commit. These capabilities support Docker-in-Docker, Kubernetes-in-Docker, K3s clusters inside system containers, and Buildx or BuildKit execution inside containers or Kubernetes pods.

Sysbox fits environments built around Docker, Kubernetes, containerd, or CRI-O, and its documented host coverage includes Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Rocky Linux, Alma Linux, CentOS Stream, Amazon Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Flatcar. The focus is specialized rather than broad: teams running conventional application containers may not need its system-container model. It also runs on Linux hosts only, and installation status varies across documented distributions, with some requiring source builds or having work-in-progress support. Choose Sysbox when nested workloads and stronger isolation are central requirements; choose another runtime when Windows containers or a simpler, general-purpose container setup is the priority.
