Our verdict on containerd
containerd is an open-source container runtime for systems that need core container functionality without a broader application platform. It runs as a daemon on Linux and Windows, handling image transfer and storage, container execution and supervision, snapshots, networking attachments, and lifecycle operations. Its strongest fit is Kubernetes and production runtime infrastructure, particularly for teams that want a focused runtime layer rather than an all-in-one container development environment.
Its feature set covers the core runtime boundary in detail. containerd supports OCI images and runtimes, image push and pull, content-addressable storage, namespaces, networking interfaces, lifecycle management, a gRPC client API, and runtime shims. Built-in Kubernetes Container Runtime Interface support makes it a direct fit for Kubernetes environments. Rootless operation through user namespaces and RootlessKit adds an option for deployments that need to run containers without relying on root privileges. Integrations with Kubernetes, Docker, BuildKit, nerdctl, and OCI registries extend its role across common container infrastructure.
The project is free and open source, with Linux and Windows coverage. Linux is the clearer fit for production use: current release documentation states that the Windows runtime and snapshot plugins are not stable and are not supported. containerd also focuses on runtime responsibilities rather than image building, so teams typically pair it with tools such as BuildKit or nerdctl when they need that workflow. Choose containerd when you need an extensible runtime with Kubernetes CRI and OCI support; choose an alternative or additional tooling when you need a fully integrated developer platform, native image building, or supported Windows runtime components.
