Our verdict on StrongDM

StrongDM is an infrastructure access platform for organizations that need centralized governance across SSH servers and other resources. It brokers connections to databases, Kubernetes clusters, cloud services, and additional infrastructure through a desktop application or command-line client. For SSH access, it supports certificate-based authentication alongside public-key, customer-managed-key, and password authentication. Administrators can organize access with users, groups, roles, policies, just-in-time workflows, and MFA requirements, making it suited to enterprise teams managing shared infrastructure rather than individuals seeking a basic SSH daemon.

The platform’s strongest fit is its access-control and audit layer. Credential brokering lets users connect without exposing resource credentials, while session auditing and audit-history export provide a centralized record of SSH activity. MFA can use TOTP or identity-provider integrations, and access policies can be paired with just-in-time workflows. The published Single SKU includes every feature and uses per-user pricing. StrongDM has no free plan, and the pricing model is contact sales, so organizations should expect a sales-led buying process rather than self-serve plan selection.

Its ecosystem coverage is broad for teams that already operate across cloud, identity, workflow, and security tools. Integrations include AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Okta, Entra ID, Google, Duo, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Jira, ServiceNow, Splunk, S3, and HashiCorp Vault. The platform supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and API access, while the category deployment details include Linux and Windows Server distributions such as Ubuntu, CentOS, RedHat, Debian, Fedora, and Amazon Linux. Choose StrongDM when governed, auditable SSH access is part of a wider infrastructure-access program. Choose a standalone SSH server instead when you need only daemon functionality without an access-broker layer.
