  • Where it wins

    • Records builds, dependencies, compiler flags, links, and outputs
    • Connects compiled-code analysis, SBOMs, fuzzing, and vulnerability context
    • Adds signed provenance, attestations, and deterministic release gates
  • Where it doesn't

    • Linux build-box installation narrows platform flexibility
    • Pricing depends on build volume and deployment model
    • Its depth may exceed the needs of general-purpose software teams

Our verdict on Strig

Strig is a software build security platform for firmware and embedded-product teams. It records source inputs, compile and link events, dependencies, flags, and outputs, then analyzes the resulting artifacts. Its scope covers R&D, DevSecOps, product security, CISO, quality, and compliance teams, with SaaS, on-premises, and air-gapped deployment options. The strongest fit is an embedded organization that needs evidence and controls spanning development, build, and release rather than a tool focused only on source code or open-source dependencies.

The platform’s standout strength is how it connects security findings to the build itself. SAST supports CERT, CWE, and MISRA rule sets, while software composition analysis is tied to compiled code. CycloneDX SBOM generation includes NTIA checks, and vulnerability findings can include CVE, EPSS, KEV, and VEX context. Binary fuzzing connects crash results to reports and release gates. Strig also produces signed SBOMs, SLSA provenance, and in-toto attestations, while build-to-build comparisons provide another way to examine changes. These capabilities give embedded teams a detailed chain from inputs and dependencies to released outputs.

Integration centers on Make, CMake, Bazel, Yocto, and Ninja, which suits build environments common to firmware and embedded development. Deterministic, policy-based release gates can return CI exit codes, making them suitable for enforcing decisions in automated pipelines. The tradeoff is focus: Strig is oriented toward Linux-based, self-hosted build environments, and the install flow described for a Linux build box adds infrastructure considerations. Licensing depends on build volume and deployment model, so teams should assess those factors with the vendor. Choose Strig when compiled artifacts, provenance, attestations, and release evidence are central requirements; choose an alternative when broad platform coverage or a simpler security workflow matters more.
