Our verdict on Strabon

Strabon is an open-source RDF database for teams storing and querying linked geospatial data, including information that changes over time. It is designed for geospatial analysts, semantic-web developers, and organizations that need spatial and temporal RDF workloads in a self-hosted environment. The system runs on Linux and Windows, exposes a SPARQL endpoint, and includes a Java endpoint client and command-line tools. PostgreSQL with PostGIS provides the backend, while Sesame/RDF4J supplies the RDF foundation.

Its main strength is the depth of its geospatial and temporal focus. Strabon queries stRDF with stSPARQL and supports a subset of GeoSPARQL, along with spatial selections, spatial joins, geometry functions, multiple coordinate reference systems, and WKT and GML geometry serialization. Temporal data and valid-time modeling extend that focus to datasets whose values change over time. The published capabilities also include RDFS entailment support for GeoSPARQL, except requirement 25. These features make Strabon a strong fit when location, time, and linked data need to be handled together rather than as separate concerns.

The deployment model favors teams comfortable managing infrastructure: Strabon is self-hosted and integrates with PostgreSQL, PostGIS, Apache Tomcat, and Sesame/RDF4J. That ecosystem can suit existing Java and PostgreSQL-based environments, but it also places setup and operational responsibility with the adopter. Its narrower geospatial scope means teams seeking a more general-purpose RDF database may prefer an alternative with broader application coverage. Choose Strabon for specialized spatiotemporal RDF work and an open-source deployment model; look elsewhere when geospatial and temporal capabilities are secondary to wider RDF functionality.
