Its phone app uses GPS and motion sensors to detect trips in the background, recording routes, distances, and start and end locations. Users can classify trips with a swipe, or set rules for frequent routes and work hours. A web dashboard supports viewing, editing, filtering, and exporting trips, and year-end summaries show mileage and deduction values.
Automatic trip detection and deduction calculation are the core strengths. SmartMiles calculates trip values using IRS rates, with an option to use custom mileage rates. Road-snapped route maps and full trip history give users records to review, while multiple-vehicle tracking and Bluetooth-based vehicle assignment can help distinguish business driving across vehicles.
