About this tool
Enter a starting amount, an optional monthly contribution, an annual interest rate and a number of years to see what the balance grows to, how much of it you put in, and how much came from interest. A table shows the balance at the end of every year.
Choose how often interest compounds — yearly, quarterly, monthly or daily. More frequent compounding earns slightly more at the same nominal rate. Monthly contributions are added at the end of each month.
The figures assume a constant rate and no taxes, fees or inflation, so they are an illustration rather than a forecast. Real investment returns vary from year to year; the calculator is best used to compare scenarios, such as starting earlier or contributing a little more each month.
