Our verdict on sipmon
sipmon is an open-source Rust command-line tool for passive SIP signaling and RTP media-quality monitoring. It is aimed at engineers diagnosing voice traffic from mirrored ports, packet-capture systems, stdin capture streams, offline pcap or pcapng files, and recorded event logs. SIP Call-ID correlation and call-state tracking connect signaling with media analysis, while a terminal monitoring interface presents diagnostics without requiring a running PBX. JSONL export also supports downstream processing of captured results.
Its strongest area is the depth of its passive packet analysis. sipmon supports live interface capture through libpcap and BPF filters, offline capture review, SIP-over-TCP reassembly, TURN relay detection, and RTP and RTCP measurements. The published feature set includes RFC 3550 jitter and packet-loss analysis, RTCP receiver-report RTT measurement, one-way delay estimation, and E-model MOS estimation. Together, these capabilities make it suitable for investigating signaling and media-quality problems from real traffic, especially when packet captures are already part of an operations workflow.
The trade-off is scope: sipmon observes and analyzes captured traffic rather than generating synthetic calls, so it is not a complete active monitoring system. Its command-line and terminal design favors technical users who are comfortable with captures, filters, event logs, and JSONL output. Teams seeking broad platform coverage, integrations, or synthetic testing should choose a product designed around those functions instead. sipmon is a strong fit for open-source, capture-driven SIP diagnostics and a narrower fit for teams that need hosted monitoring or a wider ecosystem.
