Our verdict on SingularityCE

SingularityCE is an open-source container platform for building and running portable, reproducible software environments on Linux. It is aimed at high-performance computing, shared systems, workstations, cloud systems, and HPC clusters. Its container workflow centers on compressed, read-only Singularity Image Format files, while writable sandbox containers support interactive development. Users can build from SingularityCE definition files, Dockerfiles, Docker Hub, and OCI images, then run containers through native or OCI-compatible execution modes.

The published model is straightforward: SingularityCE is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. Its feature depth is concentrated in environments where portability, controlled execution, and hardware access matter. Unprivileged builds through fakeroot or proot reduce reliance on elevated privileges. Image signing and verification support supply an integrity workflow, while encrypted containers address protected workloads. GPU support, high-speed interconnects, parallel filesystem access, and host-file access make the platform a focused option for computational workloads rather than a general desktop container experience.

Ecosystem fit is broad within Linux-oriented container workflows. SingularityCE can pull from and build with Docker Hub and OCI registries, connect with the Sylabs Container Library, and integrate with Kubernetes through Singularity-CRI. The platform does not run natively on Windows or macOS, and Kubernetes CRI support is described as under development. Choose SingularityCE when Linux, HPC, GPU access, rootless construction, or signed and encrypted images are central requirements. Teams needing native Windows or macOS containers, or a more mature Kubernetes-first workflow, should consider an alternative.
