Our verdict on Shipwright

Shipwright is an open-source framework for building container images on Kubernetes. It is designed for platform teams and development organizations that want builds represented as Kubernetes resources rather than managed through a standalone builder. Build and BuildRun custom resources separate source code, output images, build strategies, and invocations, giving teams a structured way to define and operate image builds with YAML.

Its main strength is ecosystem flexibility. Teams can use pluggable namespace-scoped or cluster-scoped strategies with BuildKit, Buildah, Kaniko, Cloud Native Buildpacks, ko, or Source-to-Image. Shipwright accepts Git, OCI artifact, and local source inputs, then publishes images to registries such as Docker Hub or Quay.io. Kubernetes secrets support registry and Git authentication, while supported BuildKit configurations add cache control, inline registry cache export, and secret mounts. Tekton Pipelines provides the execution layer, making Shipwright a fit for Kubernetes environments that already use that ecosystem.

The trade-off is operational scope. Shipwright is self-hosted software focused on Linux, APIs, and user-managed Kubernetes clusters, so teams need the surrounding cluster and pipeline environment in place. Its open-source model avoids a hosted subscription structure, but it also places deployment and platform responsibility with the adopting team. Multi-platform and multi-architecture builds are available through supported strategies, while SBOM generation is not listed as a built-in category capability. Choose Shipwright when Kubernetes-native orchestration, strategy choice, and control over build infrastructure matter most. A standalone builder is a better fit for teams seeking a more broadly accessible service without managing Kubernetes-based build execution.
