Where it wins
- Builds images for Linux, Windows, and macOS
- Supports caching, concurrent resolution, and garbage collection
- Offers distributed workers, multiple outputs, and rootless execution
Where it doesn't
- Focused on building artifacts rather than running containers

Our verdict on BuildKit
BuildKit is an open-source toolkit for converting source code into container images and other build artifacts. It is designed for teams and developers working on advanced image pipelines, especially when builds need multi-platform output, cache management, distributed workers, or rootless execution. BuildKit provides the buildkitd daemon and buildctl client, supports Dockerfile and other frontend formats, and represents build graphs with LLB.
Its strongest area is build depth. BuildKit supports concurrent dependency resolution, instruction and build-cache management, automatic garbage collection, nested build job invocations, multiple output formats, and multi-platform image building across Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its daemon supports OCI and containerd workers, while integrations with Docker, Moby, Docker Buildx, containerd, and Kubernetes provide several ways to fit it into an existing container toolchain. These capabilities make it a strong choice for complex or distributed build workflows rather than simple image creation alone.
BuildKit is free and open source, with no paid tiers to compare. The trade-off is scope: it is a builder toolkit, not a general-purpose container runtime. Its documentation includes Kubernetes deployment examples, but Kubernetes CRI is not part of the product's category specification. Teams looking for image construction with flexible outputs, caching, and rootless operation should consider BuildKit; teams seeking a complete runtime or Kubernetes CRI implementation should choose a different product.
