Our verdict on Shards
Shards is the dependency manager for Crystal applications and libraries. Developers define project metadata and dependencies in shard.yml, then Shards resolves declared version constraints and installs the project’s dependencies. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is distributed with Crystal releases. The tool is open source under the Apache License 2.0, making it a focused option for developers working within the Crystal ecosystem.
Its strongest workflow is reproducibility. Shards generates shard.lock so installations can use resolved dependency versions consistently. Dependency sources extend beyond standard Git repositories: the tool supports GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Codeberg, Mercurial, Fossil, and local paths through symlinks. It can also run postinstall hooks for dependencies and install declared project executables. This gives Crystal projects several ways to organize dependencies while keeping project declarations in a dedicated shard.yml file.
Shards is a good fit for Crystal teams that want a free, open-source dependency manager with lockfiles and varied repository support. Its scope is narrower for organizations that require verified workspaces, private registry authentication, offline operation, or integrations. Those requirements may point toward an alternative package-management workflow. For Crystal projects centered on declared dependencies, version resolution, reproducible installation, and supported repository sources, Shards keeps the package-management layer closely aligned with the language.
