Our verdict on SFTP Commander

SFTP Commander is a paid macOS file-transfer client for connecting to SFTP, FTP, FTPS, and FTPES servers. It is aimed at Mac users who need to browse remote files, upload and download files or directories, and manage everyday server connections without a broader automation layer. Transfers support drag and drop, while connection bookmarks and history help organize recurring destinations. The application also supports changing file and directory permissions and searching for files on a server.

Its strongest fit is the combination of transfer basics with Mac-specific file handling. Remote files can be previewed with QuickLook, edited locally, and uploaded back to the server. Interrupted uploads and downloads can resume, which is useful for larger or disrupted transfers. Integration with QuickLook, Touch Bar, and Bonjour adds platform alignment, while full-screen mode, notifications, and dark or light appearance modes support a native macOS workflow. These features make it more capable than a minimal file browser while keeping its scope centered on direct transfers.

SFTP Commander is less suited to teams or workflows that depend on synchronization, scheduled jobs, or repeatable transfer automation. It does not provide file synchronization, scheduled transfers, or transfer automation, so users needing those capabilities should choose a client built around managed workflows instead. Mac users who primarily need SFTP or FTP access, remote file browsing, previews, editing, permissions, and resumable transfers should find the feature set well aligned with that narrower use case. Users working across other desktop platforms or looking for automated file operations should look elsewhere.
