Our verdict on Serverspec

Serverspec is an open-source Ruby testing framework for checking whether servers match expected configuration and state. Infrastructure and operations teams can write RSpec-based assertions for packages, services, ports, files, users, groups, commands, and other server resources. Tests can target local systems or remote machines through SSH and WinRM, as well as Docker through its API, without requiring an agent on the target server. It is suited to infrastructure managed by Puppet, Chef, Ansible, CFEngine, or Itamae, while also supporting manually configured systems.

Its strongest fit is agentless validation across a focused set of server resources. The local command execution backend supports local checks, while SSH and WinRM extend testing to remote targets. Docker API support adds another execution path, and the RSpec foundation gives teams a familiar structure for expressing configuration assertions. This makes Serverspec particularly relevant for deployed infrastructure checks and infrastructure code refactoring, rather than for provisioning workflows.

The trade-off is breadth. Serverspec concentrates on server configuration and state, so teams looking for provisioning tests or a wider platform ecosystem may need a different tool or additional tooling. Windows is supported, but its support is explicitly limited. The published model is open source rather than a set of commercial tiers, which suits teams able to manage their own testing workflow and infrastructure. Choose Serverspec when agentless assertions for core server resources are the priority; consider an alternative when broad integrations, provisioning coverage, or deeper Windows support matter more.
