Our verdict on SEPIA
SEPIA is an open-source framework and client app for creating customizable digital voice assistants. It is aimed at people who want voice control for smart services and devices, especially solo users or small teams comfortable shaping their own setup. Requests can be spoken or typed, and the system connects them to services such as reminders, to-do lists, news and IoT interfaces. Public clients include web, iOS and Android, while the framework can be hosted in the cloud or self-hosted on a private server, including a single-board computer.
Customization is central to SEPIA’s appeal. Users can create and teach custom commands through the client app, while multi-step dialogs can ask for information a request lacks. The Java SDK provides a route for building voice-controlled services, and Mesh-Nodes are designed to connect devices and execute programs on them. A Control HUB handles server settings and smart-home devices. Together, these parts make SEPIA more suited to assembling a voice interface around specific services and connected hardware than to using a ready-made general-purpose assistant.
The trade-off is a comparatively focused integration footprint: the named integrations are Google Maps and FHEM, alongside the broader stated support for smart services and IoT interfaces. Its open-source model and self-hosting option will appeal to people who prioritize customization and private-server deployment, but the framework-and-client approach expects more involvement than a turnkey assistant. Choose SEPIA for configurable voice control and device connections; look elsewhere if the priority is a broad, ready-to-use AI assistant or a large named integration catalog.
