Our verdict on Scale Computing Platform
Scale Computing Platform combines virtualization, compute, storage, backup, disaster recovery, and centralized fleet management in an integrated hyperconverged infrastructure system. It is designed for organizations running workloads in data centers, branch offices, and edge locations, including environments with limited local IT resources. The platform uses SC//HyperCore, a KVM-based type 1 bare-metal hypervisor, and supports web, API, and self-hosted deployment models. Its hybrid deployment approach pairs on-premises infrastructure with cloud-based fleet management and documented hybrid-cloud capabilities.
The platform’s strongest operational fit is distributed VM management. It supports virtual machine creation, live migration of running VMs, automatic high availability, VM failover, cluster-to-cluster replication, snapshots, and VM recovery. SC//Fleet Manager adds centralized monitoring and orchestration across distributed deployments, while non-disruptive software and firmware updates support ongoing infrastructure maintenance. REST API and Ansible automation extend administration workflows, with integrations for Microsoft Azure, Azure Arc, Google Compute Engine, Acronis, and Red Hat Ansible. These capabilities make it suited to teams that want KVM virtualization with recovery and fleet controls in one system.
Scale Computing publishes three licensing tiers: Standard includes the integrated SC//HyperCore hypervisor and virtualization and VM management; Professional adds centralized management and automation; and Professional Essentials provides predictable licensing for a limited 3-node configuration. Licensing uses a contact-sales model. The platform should appeal to organizations seeking simple, centralized KVM operations across edge and data-center locations. Teams looking for a primarily cloud-hosted virtualization service, or a configuration beyond the defined Professional Essentials limit, should evaluate alternatives that better match those requirements.
