Our verdict on rules_docker

rules_docker is an open-source Bazel ruleset for developers and teams building container images within Bazel workflows. It pulls base images from registries, assembles container layers and image bundles, creates application images for several programming languages, and publishes images to registries. The published rules cover Python, Node.js, Java, Scala, Groovy, C++, Go, Rust and D. They can load images into Docker or produce loadable tarballs, while also supporting image flattening and Docker client authentication configuration.

Its strongest fit is daemonless image work inside a Bazel-based build system. The container rules do not require Docker to pull, build or push images, and the reproducible build approach suits teams that value deterministic outputs. Docker registries and Docker are the main ecosystem connections. Separate package-manager and Docker-run rules do require a configured Docker binary, so the daemonless model applies most directly to the core container image rules rather than every related capability.

The trade-off is focus and maintenance posture. rules_docker offers a broad set of language-specific image rules and practical image-transfer options, but the published positioning does not include verified multi-platform, SBOM or caching capabilities. The repository is maintained on an as-needed basis and remains available for compatibility, issue reporting, workarounds and security maintenance. Choose rules_docker when your team wants free, open-source, deterministic container builds integrated with Bazel and Docker registries. Consider another option if verified multi-platform support, SBOM generation, caching or a more actively maintained alternative is central to your selection.
